Charitable Giving Strategies in Retirement: Making a Meaningful Impact
As you enter retirement, you may find that you have more time, resources, and a desire to make a lasting impact on causes that matter to you. Charitable giving can be a fulfilling way to leave a legacy, support your community, and potentially benefit from tax advantages. Here are several charitable giving strategies to consider during retirement that can help you achieve your philanthropic goals while maximizing financial benefits.
1. Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs)
Donor-Advised Funds are a popular giving vehicle for retirees. These funds allow you to contribute assets such as cash, stocks, or mutual funds to a charitable account. You can claim an immediate tax deduction for the contributions, while having the flexibility to recommend grants to your favorite charities over time. This strategy enables you to grow your charitable fund, and you can take your time deciding which organizations to support, all while avoiding capital gains taxes on appreciated assets.
2. Charitable Remainder Trusts (CRTs)
For retirees looking to generate income while supporting charitable causes, a Charitable Remainder Trust is an excellent option. A CRT allows you to donate assets to a trust, which then provides you with regular income for a set period or your lifetime. Once the term ends, the remaining assets are donated to the charity. The primary benefit of a CRT is that it provides immediate tax deductions while allowing you to benefit from the income generated by the trust throughout your retirement.
3. Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs)
If you're 70½ or older and are required to take minimum distributions from your traditional IRA, consider making a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). A QCD allows you to donate up to $100,000 directly from your IRA to a charity without triggering income taxes on the distribution. This strategy is particularly beneficial for retirees who do not need their full required minimum distributions (RMDs) and wish to reduce their taxable income while supporting a cause they care about.
4. Charitable Lead Trusts (CLTs)
A Charitable Lead Trust is the reverse of a Charitable Remainder Trust. With a CLT, a charity receives income from the trust for a set period, and after that time, the remaining assets are transferred to your heirs. This strategy can help reduce estate taxes while supporting charitable organizations. It can be a great choice for retirees who want to balance their philanthropic goals with providing for future generations.
5. Bequests and Wills
One of the simplest ways to leave a legacy is through a bequest in your will. You can designate a specific amount, a percentage of your estate, or particular assets to a charity of your choice. This strategy ensures that your charitable intentions are carried out after your passing, and it can also reduce estate taxes for your heirs.
Yesterday’s Poll: What’s your favorite way to meet new people after 50?

Looks like the secret to meeting new people after 50 is to reconnect with old friends—because why make new ones when you’ve already got a few good ones lying around, right? 😜 Volunteering is a close second, though—doing good and making friends? Win-win! Keep those social batteries charged, everyone!
“Having morning coffee at local cafe. Even better if in walking distance to home!!☕️”
“I just had brunch with an old friend - in both senses of the word. We are both 79 and we met when my late husband and I moved to Texas in 1970. We lost touch for many years then found each other on Facebook and now we get together every couple of months.”
“I’ve started a local 50+ woman’s group on Facebook. We get together for lots of fun events. I also have met so many wonderful people at the dog park. ”
