Welcome to the second week of “Dear Joanne”. I am overwhelmed with the responses and am grateful to be a part of the RetireHub community!
As the age of early sixties have come to fruition, I find a strange relief that I could fully retire if I want, as well as some pressure of what to do during retirement if that is what I choose to do. I love my job, love my writing and love where I am in life, but find my friends and family have added a little pressure with constant inquiries as to “when are you going to retire”. Yes, some days I would rather stay in bed. Yet, I have always been one to have a full schedule and am not sure how I would manage not to have the responsibilities that I so enjoy now. If you have thoughts on the topic and would like to share your decision-making process on that topic, send me a note… I will summarize responses and share in a future column!
This week’s question comes from Jeanne:
“Dear Joanne, I recently moved from where I grew up to an area 2300 miles away to be with my daughter and her new family. Now that I am here I feel out of place. They do not seem to have time for me. Did I make a mistake? I miss my friends and my life that I had. I am 65 years old but have always been vibrant and active. Help.”
Jeanne, transitions are often challenging, and your feelings are completely valid. First, remember your goal was to be in close proximity to your daughter and her family. Mission accomplished! But you must find your new daily routine as well. Seek out the area and find something that makes you happy - - maybe a book club, senior center, or any other activity you are interested in pursuing. I know the senior center in my area has full schedules five days a week to keep everyone active and happy! And for the friends you left behind, technology is amazing these days. Schedule regular online coffee dates with your group of friends, or just Facetime a call when you are feeling the need to connect. As for your daughter, have a brief conversation with her about how you feel, but be sensitive to their time commitments as well. I am sure in a short time the two of you will be incorporating each other in tasks and social events. Remember, any transition has its tough moments. Stay positive and keep me informed of your new journeys!

Here’s how to enjoy your night out, from arrival to encore, with ease and excitement.

Gone are the box office lines—most tickets are now digital. Sign up for email alerts from artists or venues to snag presale access, and use trusted platforms like Ticketmaster or Live Nation. If you prefer a paper ticket, some venues offer mail delivery for an extra fee—just be sure to order early.
🏟 Know the Lay of the Land
Before the show, visit the venue’s website to find info on parking, seating maps, and accessibility services. The FDA has approved the Teal Wand™, the first at-home cervical cancer screening device, offering a more comfortable and private alternative to traditional Pap smears. This FDA-approved device allows women aged 25 to 65 to collect their own samples at home and mail them to a certified lab for testing.
