It’s a cruise you could only dream about. But, alas, there’s a killer on board. The dream cruise becomes a nightmare. There are obvious candidates who the killer is (you’ll know them) and non-obvious ones that would fool anybody. Add in secret rooms. This is a jigsaw puzzle with too many pieces. This book reads fast. Old guys like things fast.

On this day in 1776, most members of the Continental Congress formally signed the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia, nearly a month after it was adopted on July 4th. While July 4th is celebrated as Independence Day, August 2nd is when the majority of delegates actually put pen to parchment—making it a pivotal, if lesser-known, date in American history.

Digital Photography: Making the Most of Your Camera

Whether you're snapping shots of grandkids, garden blooms, or travels near and far, digital photography offers a wonderful way to preserve life’s moments—and you don’t need to be a tech whiz to get started. Today’s cameras, whether built into smartphones or stand-alone devices, are more user-friendly than ever. With a few tips and a little practice, anyone can unlock their inner photographer.

Get to Know Your Camera
Whether you use a smartphone or a digital camera, start by exploring its basic settings. Don’t worry about the advanced stuff just yet. Look for modes like “portrait,” “landscape,” and “night”—these pre-set options can automatically adjust lighting and focus for you. If your hands aren’t as steady as they once were, try turning on image stabilization (often found in the settings), or use a tripod for support.

Lighting Is Everything
Good lighting can transform a photo. Natural daylight—especially in the morning or late afternoon—tends to be soft and flattering. Indoors, try positioning your subject near a window. Avoid using the built-in flash unless absolutely necessary; it often washes out faces and colors. Instead, try turning on a lamp or moving to a brighter spot.

Frame the Moment
Try the “rule of thirds”: mentally divide your photo into three sections, both vertically and horizontally. Placing your subject a bit off-center often creates a more engaging image than putting everything smack in the middle. Don’t be afraid to zoom in (or move closer) to capture a detail—a smile, a flower petal, or a grandchild’s goofy expression.

Experiment and Enjoy
One of the best parts of digital photography is that you can take as many shots as you like without wasting film. Experiment with angles, lighting, and backgrounds. Take both candid and posed photos. The more you play, the more confident you’ll become—and the more you’ll discover your own unique style.

Preserve and Share
Once you’ve captured those special moments, consider organizing your photos into digital albums or printing your favorites into books. There are easy-to-use services that help you do this with just a few clicks. Sharing them with loved ones by email or social media is a lovely way to stay connected, especially if friends and family live far away.

Digital photography isn’t just about pictures—it’s about storytelling, memory-keeping, and creative joy. So pick up your camera and start clicking—your best shot might be just around the corner.
