Dividend Investing: Creating Passive Income That Grows Over Time

For those seeking a steady stream of income with the potential for long-term growth, dividend investing can be a smart and rewarding strategy—especially for retirees or anyone looking to make their savings work harder. Unlike growth stocks that rely on rising share prices, dividend-paying stocks offer regular payouts simply for holding onto them, making them a reliable source of passive income.

What Are Dividends, Anyway?
A dividend is a portion of a company’s profits shared with its shareholders. These payments are often made quarterly and can come from well-established companies like utilities, consumer goods, and healthcare firms. Think of it like receiving a thank-you check just for owning a piece of the business.

Why Dividend Investing Appeals to Long-Term Investors
One of the biggest advantages of dividend investing is its potential to generate consistent income, even during market downturns. That steady cash flow can help cover everyday expenses or be reinvested to grow your holdings over time. Many companies also increase their dividends annually, which can help your income keep pace with inflation.

Types of Dividend Stocks to Consider
Some stocks are known as “Dividend Aristocrats”—companies that have increased their dividends for 25 consecutive years or more. These are often considered reliable and financially healthy. Other options include real estate investment trusts (REITs), which must pay out a large portion of earnings to shareholders, and high-dividend exchange-traded funds (ETFs), which offer instant diversification.

Things to Keep in Mind
Not all dividends are created equal. High yields can sometimes signal risk if the company is struggling to maintain payouts. It’s important to research a company’s financial health, payout ratio (how much of its earnings go toward dividends), and long-term prospects. Spreading investments across sectors can also help reduce risk.

Getting Started
You don’t need a large amount of money to begin dividend investing. Many brokerages now allow for fractional share purchases and have no trading fees. You can also set up dividend reinvestment plans (DRIPs), which automatically use your dividends to buy more stock—no extra effort required.

The Takeaway
Dividend investing offers a compelling blend of income and stability. With thoughtful selection and patience, it’s a strategy that can help build financial independence—providing peace of mind and an income stream that can last well into retirement and beyond.

Our recent poll revealed that nearly half of you prefer to stay connected through texting or messaging apps like WhatsApp and iMessage—convenient, quick, and perfect for checking in anytime. Phone and video calls still hold strong at 24%, with social media coming in third. However you connect, we love that you're part of this community.

TOP COMMENTS

  • “I take advantage of all the above. I text all my close personal relationships. I am involved in online courses that require video calls-Zoom, Teams, or Face Time. I use social media to "browse" what's happening in the world. I stay connected with my neighborhood through a local app, and I still think and believe that an old school card or letter is a wonderful way of sending a heartfelt sentiment.”

  • “We text, we FaceTime, we send Snapchats (and have quite a streak!), and I send cards in the mail. It's hard being far from friends and loved ones, but keeping touch bridges the distance.”

  • “I enjoy getting notes in the mail and think that my family and friends do too. I often send notes that say, "I am thinking for you" or "have a great day". No one has ever complained to me that they did not like getting a card in the mail.”

The 5 Most Common Nutrient Deficiencies in Seniors — and How to Fix Them

As we age, our bodies become less efficient at absorbing key nutrients, even when we eat well. Many older adults unknowingly fall short on essential vitamins and minerals that impact energy, immunity, bone strength, and cognitive function. Among the most common deficiencies are calcium, which supports bones and nerves but is often under-consumed; and vitamin D, the "sunshine vitamin" that helps with calcium absorption and immune health. B vitamins, especially B12 and B6, are critical for brain clarity, mood, and energy levels—yet many older adults don’t get enough, leading to fatigue, nerve tingling, or mental fog. Vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant, supports immune health and memory, but more than 90% of adults over 50 don’t meet the recommended intake. Lastly, minerals like magnesium and zinc are often overlooked but play crucial roles in sleep, metabolism, wound healing, and mood regulation.

Addressing these gaps doesn’t have to be complicated. Regular bloodwork can help identify what’s missing, and a few small changes—like adding leafy greens, fortified cereals, dairy or plant-based alternatives, legumes, seeds, or fatty fish—can go a long way. Supplements may also help when food alone isn’t enough. Staying ahead of deficiencies can restore energy, improve mood and memory, and strengthen overall well-being—helping you feel your best, every day.

Lost Otter Cub Found Sleeping Among Flamingos at UK Zoo

A young otter cub, affectionately named Mingo, was discovered alone and asleep in the flamingo enclosure at Colchester Zoo in Essex, England. Weighing under 2 pounds and only a few months old, Mingo's presence in the flamingo habitat puzzled zoo officials. Typically, otter cubs are born in groups and stay with their mothers for about a year. Mingo was taken to Wildlives Rescue in Colchester and then transferred to the UK Wild Otter Trust in North Devon for expert care. The team is providing round-the-clock feeding and monitoring to ensure Mingo's recovery, with plans to release him back into the wild once he's strong enough.
