By: Anne R. Tan Graduate student Raina Sun finds herself drowning in debt and deception after her charming college adviser swindles her out of rent—only for her to soon discover his dead body, making her the prime murder suspect. As if that weren’t complicated enough, the lead detective on the case is her former flame, blurring the lines between romance and investigation. With her mischievous grandma unexpectedly in town and secrets surfacing fast, Raina must rely on her wits to prove her innocence in a case that’s anything but academic. |
On this day in 1960, six‑year‑old Ruby Bridges became the first Black child to attend an all‑white elementary school in Louisiana, escorted past angry crowds and under the protection of federal marshals. Her courageous step marked a turning point in the civil‑rights movement, proving that even one determined child can change the course of history. Today, her story remains a powerful reminder that bravery and innocence can open doors once thought permanently closed.
Ergonomics: Setting Up Your Home for Health
Creating a home that supports your body’s natural comfort can make a world of difference—especially as we spend more time indoors and in front of screens, whether reading, watching shows, crafting, or video chatting with loved ones. That’s where ergonomics comes in. Simply put, ergonomics is the science of designing spaces that fit the human body, not the other way around. And you don’t need fancy equipment or a renovation budget to feel the benefits.
Start with your favorite chair. Is your back fully supported when you sit? Are your feet flat on the floor? Adding a small lumbar pillow and raising or lowering your seat can reduce lower back strain. For folks who spend time at a desk—whether typing an email or doing a puzzle—make sure your elbows rest at a comfortable 90-degree angle and your shoulders stay relaxed, not hunched. A rolled-up towel can make a great wrist rest in a pinch!
Lighting is another overlooked area. Straining to see in dim rooms can lead to headaches and eye fatigue. Consider using task lighting with adjustable brightness at your reading or work areas. Warm-toned LED bulbs also reduce glare, especially helpful in the evening.
In the kitchen or laundry room, think about frequently used items. Are they stored in high or low spots that require reaching or bending? Keeping daily-use objects at waist or chest level can protect your joints and save energy.
Even cozy corners for watching TV or chatting on the phone can be more supportive with a few tweaks: prop up a tablet or book rather than craning your neck, and try using a lap pillow or tray to prevent awkward angles.
Small adjustments really do add up. When your home setup works with your body instead of against it, everyday activities feel smoother and less tiring. And that means more energy for the things you enjoy most.
Yesterday’s Poll Results: If you could spend the day with one wild animal (from a safe distance!), who would it be?

In this week’s whimsical wildlife poll, butterflies stole the show—earning 26% of the vote! It seems many readers would love to spend a peaceful day surrounded by fluttering wings in a sunny meadow. Close behind, the ever-charming sea otter (22%) floated into second place, proving irresistible with its snack-loving ways. The wise old owl and the fox on a dawn path tied for quiet elegance, while the curious raccoon and stoic heron rounded out the list. Whether you dream of forest trails or marshy mists, it’s clear that a brush with the wild still captures our imaginations—even from a safe distance.

Slang Phrase of the Day
Phrase: No cap
Meaning: “No cap” is a slang expression meaning “no lie” or “I’m being completely honest.” It’s often used to emphasize sincerity or truthfulness about something impressive, surprising, or hard to believe.
In a sentence: “When my grandson told me he made dinner, vacuumed, and helped his sister with homework all before 7 p.m., I said, ‘No cap? That’s impressive!’”

Ancient Roman Lead Bars From Sunken Ship Could Help Scientists Detect Dark Matter
A shipwreck off the coast of Sardinia dating to 50–80 BCE has turned into an unlikely contributor to cutting‑edge science. The Roman cargo, comprising hundreds of lead bars, sank centuries ago and has rested oil‑and‑rust free under the sea. Physicists discovered that this ancient lead is far less radioactive than modern lead, making it ideal for shielding sensitive detectors used in experiments hunting for dark matter beneath the Earth’s surface.
