ESG Investing: Aligning Values with Investments
In recent years, more investors have been looking beyond profits alone, seeking ways to align their money with their personal values. That’s where ESG investing comes in. ESG stands for Environmental, Social, and Governance — three key factors used to evaluate a company’s broader impact on the world. ESG investing allows individuals to support businesses that not only perform well financially but also operate responsibly and ethically.
Environmental criteria consider how a company addresses ecological concerns. This includes its carbon footprint, energy use, waste management practices, and efforts to combat climate change. Investors interested in sustainability often look for companies leading the way in renewable energy, clean technology, or efficient resource use.
Social factors examine how a company treats its employees, customers, and the communities it operates in. Companies with strong social credentials may prioritize workplace diversity, uphold human rights in their supply chains, and contribute positively to the public through charitable or community-focused initiatives.
Governance focuses on corporate leadership, ethics, and transparency. This includes board diversity, executive compensation, shareholder rights, and whether the company is free from corruption or conflicts of interest. Good governance often signals that a company is managed with integrity and long-term vision.
One of the key appeals of ESG investing is the opportunity to make a positive impact without sacrificing financial returns. In fact, many ESG-aligned funds have performed competitively with traditional funds, especially as consumers and regulators place increasing importance on ethical business practices.
There are several ways to get involved with ESG investing. Many mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are now specifically designed to track companies with strong ESG ratings. Individual investors can also research companies on their own or consult ESG scoring systems from independent rating agencies.
It’s important to note that ESG criteria can vary from one investment firm to another, and “greenwashing” — when companies exaggerate their ethical or environmental claims — can be a concern. Doing some due diligence, asking questions, and working with an advisor you trust can help you invest with confidence.
In short, ESG investing is about more than just making money — it’s about making a difference. Whether you’re passionate about clean energy, social justice, or corporate responsibility, ESG strategies offer a way to support your beliefs while growing your portfolio.

And the 3% who chose “Other”? They’re carving their own unique paths to healing, reminding us that there’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to care. However we seek support—together, in pairs, or solo—what matters most is finding what feels right for us.
