Dear Joanne
Your questions, her wisdom—Joanne’s here with thoughtful advice, warm humor, and a listening ear for whatever’s on your mind.

Hello, Everyone!
It’s the middle of June, and the Northeast is finally getting some warm weather. I always say, whenever I travel, my home city will have record-breaking temperatures while I am away! Spoke to my family yesterday and they said the weather has been fabulous at home. Not that I am complaining while I am overlooking the Island of Bermuda on this gorgeous cruise ship… One more vacation day to go then I am heading home.
While contemplating this week’s topic, the subject of grandchildren came to mind. On day one of my vacation this week, I received a text from my DIL telling me that my grandson was in Urgent Care. Ugh! Nothing makes a grandparent feel worse than knowing they cannot help their grandchild in a time of need. All ended up being ok (just a large bruise, swelling and some pain), but still… if I was home, I would have driven in record speed to be with him.
So, for this week’s discussion, I would like to have you think about those funny stories that only grandchildren can bring to our lives, and the funny things they say.
I’ll start.
While trying to teach my grandchildren financial responsibility, my son turned down a request from my grandchildren to go out to dinner one day. My son told them it costs a lot of money to take a family out to dinner when they can eat just as well at home. My youngest grandchild responded by saying: “We could invite Grandma and Grandpa to come to dinner with us. Grandpa always pays for everything.” Out of the mouths of babes…
I would love to share your grandchildren’s antidotes and feel-good stories with this group. Please email me your memories that you would like to share, and I will publish them in an upcoming column!
This week’s question comes from Lydia:
Dear Joanne – I hate exercise! I know hate is a strong word, but it fits appropriately in my situation. How can I get exercise into my daily routine?
Lydia – I am right there with you! I have my ups and downs, but mostly downs. I think I was most successful when I joined a Fitbit group consisting of five friends. We would challenge each other to get our steps in per day. The daily “winner” had bragging rights. Boy, did that challenge me! We could see each other’s step count throughout the day and it motivated all of us. I remember one day when one of my friends was still walking in place at about 11:45 p.m., and we were neck in neck in our step count. We both kept going right up until time ran out. It made us both laugh the next day. I won’t tell you who one, but I will tell you I wouldn’t have told you the story if I lost!
All in all, any movement you can squeeze in is good for you. I must say, Fitbit-type technology certainly is a motivator and gets you to move around. It creates a psychological advantage to help you meet a goal. Maybe some of our walking fans in this readership could start a walking challenge! Count me in!
Don’t forget to send your questions or comments by replying to this email or emailing them to [email protected].
Until next time, where every goodbye is just a promise of a new hello,
Joanne
On this day in 1983 Sally Ride became the first American woman in space! 🚀 She flew aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger on mission STS-7, breaking barriers and inspiring generations of girls to reach for the stars—literally. Film Festivals You Can Attend or Stream
For film lovers, few things are more exciting than a film festival—those magical gatherings where fresh voices are discovered, cinematic boundaries are pushed, and the buzz of indie breakthroughs fills the air. But you no longer have to travel across the globe or snag hard-to-get tickets to enjoy them. Thanks to expanded access and streaming options, many top-tier festivals now let you attend in person or watch from the comfort of your couch.
Sundance Film Festival, held every January in Park City, Utah, is one of the biggest names in indie cinema. With its mix of red carpet premieres, experimental gems, and powerful documentaries, Sundance sets the tone for the year ahead. Even better, since 2021, the festival has offered a digital platform where passholders can stream select films and panels online.
Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), known for launching Oscar contenders, is a September staple that combines Hollywood glitz with world cinema charm. It offers both in-person screenings and an online portal for Canadian viewers to stream featured films—making it easier to stay in the loop with the year’s top titles.
South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas, is more than just a film festival—it’s a cultural event. Known for spotlighting bold storytelling and tech-savvy innovation, SXSW offers virtual access to film screenings, Q&As, and keynote talks that give audiences insider views into the industry.
Smaller festivals are also joining the hybrid wave. The Tribeca Film Festival in New York and AFI Fest in Los Angeles both offer curated online selections alongside their in-person programs. Whether you’re a fan of thought-provoking shorts, international dramas, or experimental animation, these platforms bring diverse voices right to your screen.
Streaming options can vary—some festivals require passes, others offer individual ticket sales, and a few even feature free screenings. Check festival websites for schedules and access info. Some films may only be available for a limited time or within certain regions, so plan ahead!
Whether you're walking the red carpet or curling up at home with popcorn, film festivals are more accessible than ever. Attending—even virtually—connects you to global stories, creative voices, and the pulse of the cinematic world.
Yesterday’s Poll Results: How do you keep track of your appointments?

When it comes to staying on top of appointments, most of you (41%) swear by your digital calendars—Google, Apple, and Outlook are doing the heavy lifting. But don’t count out old-school charm: 27% still love flipping through their trusty paper planners. And 30% of you are blending both worlds with a hybrid approach. As for the bold 0.4% relying on memory... we salute your bravery!
TOP COMMENTS
“I keep a small paper calendar with me to jot down dates and notes, especially during doctor’s appointments. Later, I transfer the information to my electronic calendar. It’s a quicker and more convenient system when I'm at the doctor’s office.”
“A paper planner and a daily ‘to do’ list I write while enjoying my morning coffee. 😁☕️”
“I love being able to share calendars with my husband so we both know at a glance what is scheduled for that day for either of us. That being said, I am still also old-school in that I keep a paper planner as a hard-copy backup.”

Slang Phrase of the Day
Phrase: Eat my shorts
Meaning: Made popular by the famous Bart Simpson, this was a 90s slang phrase that got more than a few kids in trouble. It’s a fun rejection or rebuttal that is right up there with kiss my butt. When your brother is trying to get you to do their homework you might say, “Eat my shorts.”
In a sentence: When my grandkids challenged me to a video game tournament and thought they'd win easily, I just smiled and said, “Get ready to eat my shorts!”

Tiny Needles, Big Breakthrough: A Gentler Way to Detect Cancer
Scientists have developed ultra-thin needles—1,000 times finer than a human hair—that could replace painful biopsies for some cancer patients. These microneedles can gently collect fluid from tissues with minimal discomfort, making early detection and monitoring much easier. It’s a small invention with huge potential to reduce pain and improve how we diagnose and track cancer in the future.
