A bitter divorce leaves Andrea Dusseaux longing for a fresh start. Trading New York’s cold streets for Phoenix’s warm embrace, she finds solace in helping her old college friend run a charming restaurant in a historic Victorian house. But when she falls for the irresistible attorney Madison McKee—only to discover he’s representing the developer determined to demolish her friend’s business—Andrea is torn. Should she fight for love, loyalty, or a new beginning?

On this day in 1841, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in the landmark case The Amistad, where 53 African slaves who had been illegally captured and forced onto a Spanish slave ship were granted their freedom. The ruling was a major moment in the abolition movement, marking a pivotal step in the fight against slavery in America. The case sparked national debates on human rights and justice, and its story was later immortalized in the 1997 film Amistad, directed by Steven Spielberg.

Modern Grandparents: Staying Connected Across Miles

Grandparenting has evolved over the years, with many grandparents today navigating the challenges of distance and technology while still playing an active, loving role in their grandchildren's lives. With families spread across different states or even countries, staying connected across miles has become a top priority. Modern grandparents, however, are making it work, using a combination of old-fashioned love and new-age tech to maintain strong relationships with their grandkids.

One of the most significant shifts in grandparenting today is the increased use of digital tools. Video calls on platforms like Zoom, FaceTime, and Skype allow grandparents to read bedtime stories, play games, or simply chat with their grandchildren, making physical distance less of a barrier. In fact, a recent survey found that over 60% of grandparents use video calls regularly to stay connected with their grandchildren, a dramatic increase from just a decade ago.

Social media also plays a big role in maintaining relationships. Platforms like Facebook and Instagram give grandparents the ability to follow their grandkids’ milestones, from birthday celebrations to school plays. Sharing photos, commenting on posts, or even engaging in fun, lighthearted interactions through memes or videos has allowed grandparents to participate in their grandkids' lives in ways they might not have had the chance to before.

Text messaging has also become a favorite for quick check-ins. While younger generations may be texting multiple times a day, many modern grandparents are learning the ropes and sending regular updates or just saying, “I love you.” Many grandparents are also exploring new apps like WhatsApp or GroupMe, which enable instant communication in group chats, keeping the entire family connected with ease.

Despite the rise in technology, traditional forms of connection are still cherished. Sending handwritten letters or care packages filled with treats and keepsakes continue to be meaningful gestures that make the long distances feel shorter.

The relationship between modern grandparents and their grandchildren is a blend of tradition and innovation. The result is a unique bond that transcends physical distance and reinforces the fact that love and connection can thrive, even across miles.

If you have grandchildren, what do you think is the most important aspect of modern grandparenting?
