How to Spot Scams Targeting Seniors
Scams targeting older adults have become increasingly sophisticated, often using urgency, fear, or emotional appeals to pressure people into acting quickly. While anyone can be targeted, seniors are frequently approached with phone calls, emails, texts, or even in-person requests that appear legitimate at first glance. Knowing the common warning signs can make it much easier to spot a scam before any damage is done.
One of the biggest red flags is urgency. Scammers often insist that you must act immediately—whether it’s claiming your account will be locked, a package is being held, or a loved one is in trouble. This pressure is designed to prevent you from taking time to think or verify the information. Legitimate organizations rarely demand instant decisions, especially when money or personal details are involved.
Another common tactic is requesting unusual payment methods. Scammers may ask for gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or payment apps. These forms of payment are difficult to trace and nearly impossible to recover once sent. A real government agency, bank, or utility company will not demand payment this way. If someone insists on these methods, it’s a strong sign something isn’t right.
Be cautious of unexpected contact, even if the message looks official. Emails and texts may include logos, familiar names, or convincing language. Phone callers may “spoof” numbers to appear local or trustworthy. If you receive an unexpected request, it’s safer to hang up and contact the organization directly using a number you already know, rather than responding to the message.
Scammers also rely on emotional manipulation. They may pretend to be a grandchild needing emergency help, a charity asking for urgent donations, or a company offering prizes that require a fee to claim. These approaches are designed to create excitement, fear, or sympathy. Taking a moment to pause and talk with a trusted friend or family member can help you assess whether the situation makes sense.
Protecting yourself doesn’t require technical expertise. Simple habits—like not sharing personal information, avoiding clicking unknown links, and verifying requests—go a long way. Registering for call-blocking services, enabling spam filters, and reviewing bank statements regularly can also help catch problems early. When in doubt, it’s always okay to say no, hang up, or take time to investigate.
Scams succeed when people feel rushed or isolated. Staying informed, slowing down, and asking questions are powerful tools. By recognizing the warning signs, seniors can feel more confident navigating unexpected requests and protecting their finances and personal information.

Yesterday’s Poll Results: Do you ever socialize while walking or hiking locally?

Most readers say socializing on local walks happens naturally rather than intentionally, with the largest group chatting when the opportunity arises. A notable portion prefer quiet solo walks, while others build connection by regularly walking with friends or groups. Smaller groups actively strike up conversations on the trail or report not having nearby options, suggesting that while many value the social side of walking, flexibility and personal preference still play a big role.
TOP COMMENTS
“I live on a great paved trail in Central Florida. I walk daily and meet such lovely people.”
“I'm not able to walk as much as I used to and I prefer walking for a purpose (to the store or a friend's house)- either alone or with my wife.”
“It is hard for me to walk. Bad knees and heart issues. My neighbor walks her two dogs everyday any season on local hiking trails. She posts pictures of her hikes. Looks like fun.”
“I don't walk. I would like to, I used to, but now my knees, ankles and hips hurts, sometimes just going to the mailbox and back. If I walk I go around my block so if something happens I'm close to home.”
Hotel Safety Made Simple: Easy Precautions for Peace of Mind
Staying safe in a hotel often comes down to a few simple habits, such as choosing accommodations carefully and remaining aware of your surroundings. Practical precautions include keeping your door locked, using the peephole before opening, avoiding sharing your room number, and being cautious of unexpected calls or knocks claiming to be staff. Securing valuables, requesting a room in a safer location, and trusting your instincts can also help reduce risk. Small, thoughtful steps like these can make travel feel more comfortable and provide added peace of mind.

Community Spirit on Full Display: Thousands Unite to Build Beds for Children in a 24-Hour Effort
A major volunteer event in North Carolina brought together more than 6,500 people who worked around the clock to build approximately 10,000 beds for children who currently don’t have one. Organized through a partnership between a national nonprofit and corporate sponsors, the effort turned a convention center into a massive assembly line where volunteers cut, sanded, stained, and assembled bed frames over a single 24-hour period.
The initiative is part of a broader mission to address the large number of children in the United States who are estimated to be sleeping without proper beds. Organizers and volunteers emphasized both the practical impact—providing safe sleeping spaces—and the emotional significance of restoring dignity and comfort to children in need.
Once completed, the beds (along with mattresses and bedding) are distributed across dozens of communities in multiple states, helping local chapters serve families who have been waiting for assistance. The event highlights how coordinated volunteer action, combined with business and nonprofit partnerships, can produce large-scale results in a very short time frame while strengthening community engagement and awareness of child welfare needs.
