A chilling death shocks the community.... In this richly atmospheric family saga, step into the storied streets of deceptively charming Charleston, South Carolina, where cobblestone alleys whisper buried secrets and the sweet scent of Magnolias mask something far darker. On this day in 1918 Nelson Mandela was born in the village of Mvezo, South Africa. Mandela would go on to become a towering global figure in the fight against apartheid and a symbol of peace and reconciliation. After spending 27 years in prison, he was released in 1990 and later became South Africa’s first Black president in 1994. His leadership and moral courage continue to inspire generations around the world.

Today, July 18 is recognized as Nelson Mandela International Day, a global call to action to spend 67 minutes doing something good—one minute for each year he spent serving others.

Hydration: Why It Matters More Now
Staying Well Starts with Water—Especially as We Age

As we get older, our bodies undergo subtle shifts that can make staying hydrated more challenging—and more crucial than ever. Dehydration isn’t just about feeling a little thirsty. It can impact everything from energy levels and digestion to cognition and heart health. That’s why it’s so important to make hydration a daily habit, especially during hot weather or periods of increased activity.

One reason hydration becomes trickier with age is that our body’s sense of thirst naturally diminishes. You might not feel thirsty even when your body is running low on fluids. At the same time, kidneys become less efficient at conserving water, and medications like diuretics can further contribute to fluid loss. These changes can sneak up on you, increasing the risk of fatigue, dizziness, headaches, confusion, and even urinary tract infections.

But here’s the good news: staying hydrated doesn’t require chugging gallons of water. Small, steady efforts throughout the day go a long way. Aim for 6 to 8 cups of fluids daily—more if it's hot or you're especially active. Water is ideal, but herbal teas, low-sugar electrolyte drinks, fruit-infused water, and even water-rich foods like cucumbers, watermelon, and oranges count too.

Not sure if you’re drinking enough? Watch for signs like dry mouth, dark yellow urine, or feeling unusually tired. A helpful tip is to keep a glass or bottle nearby and take sips often, even if you’re not particularly thirsty. Flavoring your water with a slice of lemon, mint, or berries can make it more appealing, especially if plain water doesn’t excite you.

Incorporating hydration into your routine can be simple: a glass of water with each meal, a cup of tea in the afternoon, or setting a reminder to take a few sips every hour. If you take medications or have health concerns, check with your doctor about the right amount of fluids for you.

Ultimately, drinking enough water is one of the easiest and most powerful ways to support your health. It keeps your joints cushioned, your mind sharp, your heart working efficiently, and your digestion running smoothly. In short, hydration is a quiet champion of wellness—and it deserves a prime spot in your daily self-care.

Phrase: Rotting

Good News of the Day

Grieving Pony Becomes Surrogate Mother to Rare Wild Foal

In a heartwarming tale of compassion and survival, a domestic pony named Alice has stepped in as a surrogate mother to Marat, a rare Przewalski's horse foal at the Minnesota Zoo. Born on May 17, 2025, Marat faced immediate challenges, including critical illness and rejection by his biological mother, Nady, after a period of intensive care.

Alice, who had recently lost her own foal, was introduced to Marat as a potential foster mother. The bond was immediate; Alice accepted Marat, allowing him to nurse and providing the nurturing care he desperately needed.

This unexpected maternal connection has been crucial for Marat's development. As one of the last truly wild horse species, Przewalski's horses are critically endangered, with fewer than 2,000 individuals remaining. Marat's survival is vital for the species' future, and Alice's role has been instrumental in his recovery and socialization.

Zoo staff plan to integrate Marat into the wild Przewalski's herd before he matures, ensuring he retains his natural behaviors and instincts. This story highlights the profound impact of compassion and the unexpected ways in which animals can care for one another, offering hope for the conservation of endangered species.
