Dear Joanne
Your questions, her wisdom — Joanne’s here with thoughtful advice, warm humor, and a listening ear for whatever’s on your mind.

As I get ready for Easter with the family, I can't help but think about the Easter holiday when I was a kid. I went to a Catholic grammar school, so the March holiday was one of the high points of the school year. I remember Easter used to be a dignified holiday. You put on your Sunday best, marched into church with the adult women smelling faintly of Aqua Net, and we posed for family pictures while Moms begged, "Smile nicely or else." It was a sacred day, a family day, and a day when small children were dressed in their patent leather shoes.
Now that we're older, Easter has taken on a slightly different tone. It's still about faith, family, and celebration, but it has new theatrics, like the cost of groceries, sugar-loaded grandchildren will be coming to visit, and you have at least one folding chair that threatens to take someone out if they have too many calories at dinner.
Let's start with Easter clothes. There was a time when we wore proper outfits. Women had hats, gloves, and shoes that were apparently designed by a man. Men wore ties that were knotted right up to their Adam's apple. Children were scrubbed, polished, and displayed like department store mannequins. Now? If your pants can have a flexible waistband and your shoes do not have holes in them, that counts as "holiday formal."
Then there's the Easter basket situation. In our day, you got a chocolate bunny, a bag of jellybeans from Woolworth, maybe a few malted eggs, and you were thrilled. From what I am hearing from young Moms today, kids now seem to model themselves after their favorite social media influencer. They don't want plain milk chocolate. Suzie is "not really into milk chocolate anymore," and Joey would prefer something imported, gluten-free, and ethically sourced by monks in the Swiss Alps. I'm sorry, but you are six years old. Eat the jellybeans and move along (or leave them for ME).
And don't even get me started on Easter egg hunts. Back then, children ran around wildly, found what they found, and accepted disappointment like little citizens. Today's kids approach an egg hunt like it's a military operation. They have got routes planned, territory control, and one kid who somehow always shows up with a basket big enough to haul a yard full of mulch. And the grandparents? We are still out there bending over to hide eggs, looking like we are auditioning for a lower back injury seminar.
Of course, no Easter is complete without losing track of at least three eggs. You can pretty much mark this on the calendar. One for sure will be found by smell alone. One will be found by the dog. And one won't be discovered until July when someone moves the sofa and screams like they may have found a crime scene. After a couple years of these scenarios, I changed to small plastic eggs and placed money in each. Somehow wherever there is a scent of money, all eggs will be found!
Then comes Easter dinner, where one person does 97% of the work and everyone else says, "Let me know if you need anything," while actively avoiding eye contact. Suddenly you're running a restaurant out of your kitchen. The honey baked ham costs the same as a car payment, the deviled eggs disappear in eight seconds, and one of my adult sons will asks, "Is there anything to snack on?" Yes, dear. There is an entire ham, three casseroles, two pies, and a plethora worth of candy, which everyone seems determined to consume first, and then be too full for dinner.
And yet, in spite of all the chaos, there's something comforting about Easter. The hymns are beautiful, the flowers are bright, the grandkids are excited, and for one day in the springtime the family gathers together without needing a wedding, funeral, or medical emergency to make it happen. That alone is a miracle worthy of recognition.
So, here's to Easter in retirement: when the foot pain is real, the candy is richer, and the true resurrection story needs to be told each and every year.
Happy Easter to all my readers, followers and email communicators! May all your chocolate be solid, your ham be fully cooked, and your missing eggs be found before Memorial Day.
Email me at [email protected] and tell me your Easter traditions!
Joanne

Movie Soundtracks That Stood the Test of Time
Few things in film are as memorable as a soundtrack that perfectly captures the emotion of a scene. From sweeping orchestral scores to contemporary hits, music has the power to transport us, evoke nostalgia, and make a movie unforgettable. A truly great soundtrack can outlast the film itself, becoming part of our personal memories and cultural fabric.
Consider “The Sound of Music”—its songs like “Do-Re-Mi” and “My Favorite Things” have transcended generations, still sung and hummed decades after the film’s release. Similarly, “Star Wars”, with John Williams’ iconic score, introduced themes that are instantly recognizable and continue to inspire awe, even for those who’ve never seen the films. On the other end of the spectrum, soundtracks like “Pulp Fiction” and “Guardians of the Galaxy” introduced a curated mix of classic rock, surf, and soul tracks, breathing new life into old songs while perfectly complementing the narrative on screen.
Movie music doesn’t just live in the background—it shapes our emotional experience. A dramatic crescendo can make a climax unforgettable, while a delicate melody can linger in the heart long after the credits roll. Many soundtracks also serve as cultural snapshots, reflecting the music, trends, and styles of the time. For instance, the 1980s brought films like “Footloose” and “Top Gun”, where pop hits became inseparable from the stories they accompanied, creating a sense of nostalgia that persists today.
Beyond nostalgia, some scores are a masterclass in composition. “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy showcases Howard Shore’s ability to create intricate musical motifs for characters, places, and events, enhancing the story without a single word. These soundtracks demonstrate how music can elevate storytelling, transforming a film into an immersive experience that engages multiple senses.
Ultimately, a timeless movie soundtrack is one that resonates emotionally, complements the story, and lingers in our minds long after the lights come up. Whether it’s a classic musical, an epic orchestral score, or a curated mix of hits, these soundtracks remind us why music and film are such a perfect pair.

Yesterday’s Poll Results: When it comes to QR codes, which best describes your approach?

The results show a clear middle ground when it comes to QR code usage. Half of respondents (50%) say they use QR codes sometimes—but only when they trust the source—suggesting that while adoption is widespread, caution is still top of mind. A smaller group (9%) feels fully comfortable scanning codes anywhere, while a combined 38% either rarely use them or avoid them altogether due to safety concerns. Overall, the takeaway is that QR codes have become a normalized part of daily life, but trust and security still play a major role in how people engage with them.

Using AI to Stay Sharp and Think Clearly at Any Age
Artificial intelligence isn’t just for the young—it can help anyone organize thoughts, refine communication, and gain insight into their own thinking. By interacting with AI tools, users can articulate ideas, sort through emotions, and clarify intentions before sharing them with others. This neutral, judgment-free feedback encourages reflection and helps separate facts from assumptions, improving how we express ourselves in daily life.
Beyond communication, thoughtful AI use can enhance self-awareness and mental sharpness. Slowing down to refine language—whether asking questions, making decisions, or recounting memories—keeps the mind engaged and helps maintain clarity as we age. Used wisely, AI becomes less about technology and more about supporting a sharper, more reflective mind.

Good News of the Day
From Toxic Wasteland to Productive Land: A Tribal Renewal
In northeastern Oklahoma, a community once scarred by over a century of lead and zinc mining has embarked on a remarkable environmental turnaround. The land, part of the notorious Tar Creek Superfund site, was left covered with toxic mining waste that polluted soil and water across miles of territory. Over decades, the Quapaw Nation took the lead on cleanup efforts—removing contaminated material, restoring topsoil, and reintroducing vegetation—which has allowed previously barren ground to return to agricultural use and support livestock, reaffirming both ecological health and tribal self‑determination.
