When it comes to investing, most people focus on returns. The counterintuitive truth about building your account balances is: it's not just about returns, it's about taxes.

For example, tax loss harvesting alone can improve portfolio performance by approximately 0.8% to 1.5% per year. That’s not a rounding error—that’s real compounding power.

If you want to avoid these 5 mistakes but don't have the time to implement, it's simple to connect with a pre-screened financial advisor on your terms.

Dear Joanne

Your questions, her wisdom—Joanne’s here with thoughtful advice, warm humor, and a listening ear for whatever’s on your mind.

When was the last time someone was truly excited upon your arrival home at the end of the day? Now, I must say my husband is somewhat happy to see me when I get home, but certainly not as excited as my yellow lab! From the time she hears my car approaching, she is running from window to window, tail wagging, tongue hanging out. If she happens to be outside, she is running the entire width of our property, back and forth, her excitement escalating as I get closer.

Whether I am gone ten minutes or a full eight-hour day, she greets me with the same enthusiasm. It is the kind of welcome that never gets old. It should also remind us that we are the center of their world.

A dog (or any pet, I am sure), does so much for our human psyche. My dog never cares whether I totally bombed a report presentation that I took part in earlier in the day. My dog doesn’t care how many unread emails I have in my mailbox, or what the balance is in my checking account. All my dog cares about is that I am home and will pay just a little attention to her! And possibly give her a treat as I walk by that special container that only she cares about.

Many experts believe that pets help our mental and emotional well-being. According to the CDC in their Healthy Pets, Healthy People initiative, pets provide a number of benefits, including lowering our blood pressure and cholesterol, helping us increase our physical activity, and providing us with more social interaction. So yes, pets aren’t just our companions, they can be part of a healthy lifestyle.

I can only think of one major downfall to having a pet, and that is knowing their lifespan is much shorter than that of a human. Saying goodbye is a very difficult experience. I take myself back to 2013 when I had to say goodbye to my yellow lab. I sat in the animal hospital with her on the table, nose-to-nose, not wanting to face the fact that the vet was whispering to me that “it was time”. I tried to be string, telling her that it was okay and that I would be fine. I was there for her last breath, and for many minutes after that. Just thinking about it brings tears to my eyes, even after all these years. I vowed that would be it for me – no more animals. I would never be able to go through that again.

Two years later, our new yellow lab puppy joined our family. She brought back great memories and gave us so many more. After everything we have been through, the best part of the evening is when I am sitting on the couch, and she jumps up and cuddles next to me. So relaxing and comforting.

Every dog I have ever had has that unique instinct to know when I am happy, grieving, sad, busy, frustrated, mad, happy, celebrating or just plain tired. It amazes me that they know how to react every single time. I remember one specific time when I was home alone crying on my couch (I don’t even remember why). My dog came over and put her head right next to mine and did not move. She didn’t ask for anything, didn’t whine, didn’t get in the way. Just sat there until I felt better. Such unconditional love.

Pets are never just animals. They are a tremendous part of who we are. In our retirement community we see this love every day – dogs walking beside their owners on their morning walks, cats sunning themselves in the windows, and of course the stories and photos everyone has on them whenever we sit and have our afternoon lunch gatherings together.

As we all settle into our retirement years, many of us find ourselves reflecting on relationships that have shaped our lives. I am thinking we will find it is not only human friendships that have contributed, but also our loyal pets who have been there every step of the way. I am guessing many of you out there have fur-babies and would love to share your specific stories! Please respond to this newsletter and send me your stories, along with a photograph! I would love to feature you, your pets and your stories in a future column! Remember, your story could very well help someone who needs a heartfelt memory only you can share.

Until next time, where every goodbye is just a promise of a new hello,

Joanne

On this day in 1961 construction began on the Berlin Wall, the concrete and barbed-wire barrier that physically and ideologically divided East and West Berlin during the Cold War. Initially erected overnight to prevent mass emigration from East to West, it stood for 28 years before falling in 1989, becoming one of the most powerful symbols of a divided world.

Music Streaming: Finding Your Favorite Artists

For many of us, music has been a lifelong companion—whether it was listening to records on a turntable, tuning in to the radio for the Top 40 countdown, or popping a cassette into the car stereo for a road trip. Today, streaming has replaced much of that, putting millions of songs right at your fingertips. For seniors, it can feel a little overwhelming at first, but with the right approach, music streaming can be a joy-filled way to reconnect with old favorites and discover new ones.

Getting Started
Music streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and Pandora allow you to play virtually any song, album, or playlist instantly. You can listen on a smartphone, tablet, computer, or even a smart speaker. Most services have a free version with ads, or you can pay a monthly fee for ad-free listening and offline downloads.

Finding Your Favorites
If you’re looking for that perfect Ella Fitzgerald ballad or the Beatles track you loved in your 20s, simply use the search function and type in the artist’s name. Many platforms also have “artist pages” that list their albums, singles, and live performances. For an even deeper dive, check out curated playlists—these often group songs by theme, decade, or genre, making it easy to revisit the soundtrack of your life.

Discovering New Music
Streaming services don’t just play what you already know—they suggest songs based on your listening habits. Play a Frank Sinatra track, and the app may recommend similar crooners you’ve never heard before. You might stumble across a modern jazz singer who feels just as timeless as the classics. Many services also offer “radio” stations built around an artist or genre, which can be a fun way to explore without constantly searching.

Making Playlists
One of the best features of streaming is the ability to create personal playlists. You can build one for morning coffee, another for Sunday cleaning, and one for unwinding at night. Think of them as your own custom mixtapes—without the hassle of rewinding tapes or flipping records.

Why It’s Worth Trying
Streaming lets you carry an entire music library in your pocket, relive cherished memories, and discover music that keeps life feeling fresh and vibrant. Whether you’re dancing to Motown in the kitchen, revisiting 70s folk classics, or exploring something entirely new, music streaming can make every day a little brighter and more tuneful.

Slang Phrase of the Day

Phrase: Jamscape

Meaning: A lively, feel-good atmosphere created when music perfectly matches the mood of the moment—turning any space into your own personal dance floor or concert.

Trash Turned Treasure: Celebrating 35 Years of Art Born from Waste

For 35 years, San Francisco’s waste management company, Recology, has been quietly nurturing creativity in an incredibly unique way. Their one-of-a-kind Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program invites local artists to explore the vast, ever-changing landscape of the city’s recycling center—scavenging discarded materials and transforming them into thoughtful, powerful art. Since its inception in 1990, the program has supported over 190 professional and 60 student artists, offering studio space, stipends, and access to a treasure trove of reclaimed resources.

This summer, San Francisco is showcasing the fruits of that creative spirit with “Art / Education / Community: 35 Years of Recology AIR”, a free exhibition at the Minnesota Street Project running through August 30. The exhibit features stunning works—from satirical sculptures to intricate installations—that push us to rethink waste and rediscover beauty in the everyday.

This isn’t just art—it’s a powerful reminder that what we discard need not be forgotten. Recology’s pioneering residency has turned trash into compelling stories, showcasing how imagination can flourish even in the most unlikely of places.
