| Dear Joanne | Your questions, her wisdom — Joanne’s here with thoughtful advice, warm humor, and a listening ear for whatever’s on your mind. | | As a group, we usually spend our time talking about the things we miss or the memories we treasure. This week, I thought I'd go in a different direction and talk about the things that have made life easier—or at least convinced us they would. | Today I bought a futuristic contraption without telling my husband. (Sometimes it's easier to explain a purchase after the box has already arrived.) | It's a Breakfast Robot that cracks and cooks eggs! It's not even on the market yet, but I'm officially on the waiting list. | Now, let's put this into perspective. I rarely cook eggs. I will happily eat eggs as long as someone else has done all the work. | But this magical machine promises that I simply place two eggs into the top, it cracks them one at a time, gently drops them into a waiting pan, and cooks them sunny-side up to perfection. I saw the video and immediately thought, “Yes...this is exactly what my life has been missing.” I'm pretty sure this is the purchase that finally completes me. | It also got me thinking about all the inventions over the last 50-plus years that have completely changed our lives. For example, there was a time when “channel surfing” meant Dad yelling from his recliner, “Turn it to Channel 7!... No, go back!... Too far!... The other way!... STOP!” Children today will never understand the pressure of being the family's live remote control. One wrong click of the dial and you were grounded. | Back then, if the phone rang, you answered it without knowing who was calling. It might be Grandma...or someone trying to sell encyclopedias. | And if someone wanted to see you, they just showed up at your front door. There was no text asking, “Are you home?” They simply assumed you were. And if you weren't...well, they'd talk to your neighbors until you got back. | Somehow, we survived. | Today I can sit in my favorite chair and control almost everything in the house without moving more than my thumb. I can turn on the television, raise my recliner, lower the blinds, adjust the thermostat, and ask my phone what the weather is on my exact street at this exact moment. | Unfortunately, I still have to get up for coffee, unless I can convince my husband to do that for me. Clearly, technology still has room for improvement. | One invention I never thought I'd appreciate is GPS. I used to love AAA's TripTiks. Remember those? They'd hand you a spiral-bound route highlighted in bright marker that practically said, “Don't mess this up.” I thought I'd use those forever. Now, whenever I miss a turn, a calm little voice simply says, “Recalculating.” No sigh. No eye roll. No “I told you to turn back there.” If only spouses came with that feature. | Still, I have to admit that life has become easier. Which made me curious. What invention has made your life easier? Which one still makes you smile every time you use it? And which invention creates more aggravation than it's worth? | Email me at [email protected] and let me know your thoughts. | Maybe somebody can invent a machine that brings us coffee when we need a refill. | Joanne | PS: Thank you everyone who emailed me last week with your kind words and email hugs. It certainly made me feel loved and comforted. | |

| | | On this day in 1923, the British Broadcasting Company (later known as the BBC) made its very first official radio broadcast from London. This milestone launched what would become one of the world’s most respected public broadcasters, shaping news, culture, and entertainment for decades to come. It marked the beginning of radio’s golden era—bringing music, drama, and headlines directly into homes across Britain and eventually the world. |

| | Safe Online Banking: What You Need to Know | As more people turn to the convenience of online banking, protecting your financial information is more important than ever. Whether you're paying bills, transferring funds, or simply checking your balance from a smartphone or computer, it's essential to keep your accounts secure. The good news? With a few simple steps, you can bank online with confidence and peace of mind. | Use Strong, Unique Passwords | Start by creating strong, hard-to-guess passwords for your banking accounts. Avoid using personal information like birthdays or pet names. A strong password typically includes a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. Better yet, use a password manager to generate and safely store unique passwords for each account. | Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) | Many banks now offer two-factor authentication—a security feature that requires both your password and a second verification method, like a code sent to your phone. This extra step may seem small, but it adds a powerful layer of protection. | Be Wary of Phishing Scams | Never click on links in unsolicited emails or text messages that claim to be from your bank. Scammers often pose as banks to trick you into revealing personal information. When in doubt, go directly to your bank’s website or call the customer service number on the back of your debit or credit card. | Keep Devices and Software Updated | Ensure your computer, phone, and any apps you use for banking are updated regularly. These updates often include important security patches that protect you from new threats. | Use Secure Wi-Fi | Avoid accessing your bank account using public Wi-Fi networks (like those at cafes or airports). If you must bank on the go, use your phone’s secure data connection or a trusted virtual private network (VPN). | Monitor Your Accounts | Check your accounts frequently for unfamiliar transactions. Most banks allow you to set up alerts for purchases, transfers, or logins, helping you spot any suspicious activity quickly. | Final Thoughts | Online banking is fast, easy, and here to stay—but staying safe requires a little know-how. By taking a few precautions and staying alert, you can enjoy the convenience of online banking while keeping your finances secure. | 💬 How safe do you feel when using online banking? | |

| Yesterday’s Poll Results: Do your investments reflect your values? |
|
| | The poll reveals a wide range of attitudes toward ESG investing among respondents. Nearly half (47%) prioritize financial returns above all else, indicating that values-based investing isn’t yet a main focus for many. However, there’s a notable openness to learning, with 24% investing traditionally but interested in exploring ESG options. Meanwhile, 20% have heard of ESG investing but remain unclear on its impact, suggesting an opportunity for education. Only a small fraction (1%) actively prioritize ESG funds, showing that while ethical investing appeals to some, it hasn’t yet become mainstream. These results highlight both the growing curiosity and the need for clearer information around aligning investments with personal values. | TOP COMMENTS | “I had not heard of ESG investing before this. We don't decide what to invest in, our financial advisor does that.” “My income covers my expenses month to month, I have no investments. But little debt.” “Investments? I'm just trying to survive.”
