| Dear Joanne | Your questions, her wisdom — Joanne’s here with thoughtful advice, warm humor, and a listening ear for whatever’s on your mind. | | Father’s Day arrives every June with a familiar tradition: children buying ties for men who retired from wearing them years ago, or a “Greatest Dad” mug to add to the mug collection now consisting of 157 mugs housed in the kitchen cabinet of a house that has two residents. | Retirement and fatherhood have more in common than most people realize. Both begin with unrealistic expectations, both involve unexpected expenses, and neither comes with a user manual. | For decades, fathers spent their lives answering impossible questions: “Why is the sky blue?” “Are we there yet?” “Can I borrow the car?” “Can I borrow a few bucks?” | Then retirement arrives and it is the father that now has questions of his own: “What day is it?” “Why did I come into this room?” “Where did I leave my glasses?” | The good news is that retired dads finally have time to pursue their own passions. The bad news is that many of those passions involve standing in their workshops in the basement staring at shelves, moving the same tools from one location to another, and explaining lawn care strategies with the intensity of a military briefing. | Retired fathers also become experts in weather forecasting. Not professional forecasting, of course. The kind based entirely on aching knees, cloud shapes, and statements such as, “I don’t trust that wind.” | And while many people think retirement means relaxation, most fathers know better. In our house, for example, retirement simply replaced my husband’s boss with a spouse (me) who has been quietly compiling a list of projects since 2015. In most houses, that list is referred to as the “honey do” list. | Some retired dads dream of traveling the world. Others dream of sitting in a recliner and being left alone long enough to watch the news without being asked any questions. | Perhaps that’s why Father’s Day matters. It gives us a chance to recognize the men who taught our children how to ride bikes, change tires, grill burgers, be a successful homeowner, be a good dad, and occasionally solve problems by hitting things gently with a wrench. | Retirement may have taken away the morning commute, the meetings, and the alarm clock, but it hasn’t changed what makes a father valuable. He is still the family historian, advisor, occasional (or maybe not so occasional) ATM, and self-appointed quality inspector of every home repair. | So, this Father’s Day, celebrate the retired dads in your life. Let them tell their favorite stories again. Laugh at the same jokes you’ve heard for twenty years. Pretend to be impressed by the condition of the lawn. After all, they’ve earned it. | And if you’re a retired father yourself, enjoy the day. You’ve spent a lifetime taking care of everyone else. Today, relax, put your feet up, and remember: if your wife gives you a tie, it’s probably a subtle suggestion that she wants you to go back to work. | Email me this week and tell me how you celebrated the men in your life this week. Send your stories to [email protected]. | Joanne | |

| | Film Festivals You Can Attend or Stream | For film lovers, few things are more exciting than a film festival—those magical gatherings where fresh voices are discovered, cinematic boundaries are pushed, and the buzz of indie breakthroughs fills the air. But you no longer have to travel across the globe or snag hard-to-get tickets to enjoy them. Thanks to expanded access and streaming options, many top-tier festivals now let you attend in person or watch from the comfort of your couch. | Sundance Film Festival, held every January in Park City, Utah, is one of the biggest names in indie cinema. With its mix of red carpet premieres, experimental gems, and powerful documentaries, Sundance sets the tone for the year ahead. Even better, since 2021, the festival has offered a digital platform where passholders can stream select films and panels online. | Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), known for launching Oscar contenders, is a September staple that combines Hollywood glitz with world cinema charm. It offers both in-person screenings and an online portal for Canadian viewers to stream featured films—making it easier to stay in the loop with the year’s top titles. | South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas, is more than just a film festival—it’s a cultural event. Known for spotlighting bold storytelling and tech-savvy innovation, SXSW offers virtual access to film screenings, Q&As, and keynote talks that give audiences insider views into the industry. | Smaller festivals are also joining the hybrid wave. The Tribeca Film Festival in New York and AFI Fest in Los Angeles both offer curated online selections alongside their in-person programs. Whether you’re a fan of thought-provoking shorts, international dramas, or experimental animation, these platforms bring diverse voices right to your screen. | Streaming options can vary—some festivals require passes, others offer individual ticket sales, and a few even feature free screenings. Check festival websites for schedules and access info. Some films may only be available for a limited time or within certain regions, so plan ahead! | Whether you're walking the red carpet or curling up at home with popcorn, film festivals are more accessible than ever. Attending—even virtually—connects you to global stories, creative voices, and the pulse of the cinematic world. | 🎬 How do you prefer to enjoy film festivals? | |

As for the bold 0.4% relying on memory... we salute your bravery! | TOP COMMENTS | “I keep a small paper calendar with me to jot down dates and notes, especially during doctor’s appointments. Later, I transfer the information to my electronic calendar. It’s a quicker and more convenient system when I'm at the doctor’s office.” “A paper planner and a daily ‘to do’ list I write while enjoying my morning coffee. 😁☕️” “I love being able to share calendars with my husband so we both know at a glance what is scheduled for that day for either of us. That being said, I am still also old-school in that I keep a paper planner as a hard-copy backup.”
