| Dear Joanne | | Hello, Readers! Just a reminder that I am on vacation this week. I will be back next week with all new thoughts, fun and adventures! Please email me at "[email protected]" and let me know what exciting adventures or challenges you have experienced this week. Talk to you soon! | |
|
| | | Dear Joanne | Your questions, her wisdom—Joanne’s here with thoughtful advice, warm humor, and a listening ear for whatever’s on your mind. | | Welcome to the second week of “Dear Joanne”. I am overwhelmed with the responses and am grateful to be a part of the RetireHub community! | As the age of early sixties have come to fruition, I find a strange relief that I could fully retire if I want, as well as some pressure of what to do during retirement if that is what I choose to do. I love my job, love my writing and love where I am in life, but find my friends and family have added a little pressure with constant inquiries as to “when are you going to retire”. Yes, some days I would rather stay in bed. Yet, I have always been one to have a full schedule and am not sure how I would manage not to have the responsibilities that I so enjoy now. If you have thoughts on the topic and would like to share your decision-making process on that topic, send me a note… I will summarize responses and share in a future column! | | This week’s question comes from Jeanne: | “Dear Joanne, I recently moved from where I grew up to an area 2300 miles away to be with my daughter and her new family. Now that I am here I feel out of place. They do not seem to have time for me. Did I make a mistake? I miss my friends and my life that I had. I am 65 years old but have always been vibrant and active. Help.” | Jeanne, transitions are often challenging, and your feelings are completely valid. First, remember your goal was to be in close proximity to your daughter and her family. Mission accomplished! But you must find your new daily routine as well. Seek out the area and find something that makes you happy - - maybe a book club, senior center, or any other activity you are interested in pursuing. I know the senior center in my area has full schedules five days a week to keep everyone active and happy! And for the friends you left behind, technology is amazing these days. Schedule regular online coffee dates with your group of friends, or just Facetime a call when you are feeling the need to connect. As for your daughter, have a brief conversation with her about how you feel, but be sensitive to their time commitments as well. I am sure in a short time the two of you will be incorporating each other in tasks and social events. Remember, any transition has its tough moments. Stay positive and keep me informed of your new journeys! | | Here's to a great week everyone… Don’t forget to send your questions or comments by replying to this email, or emailing to [email protected]. | Until next time, where every goodbye is just a promise of a new hello, | Joanne |

| | Concert-Going in the Modern Era: A Then-and-Now Guide to a Great Night Out | Live music is one of life’s great joys—whether you’re seeing a beloved band from the past or discovering a new favorite artist. Concerts today may look a little different from the ones you remember (wave goodbye to paper tickets and say hello to QR codes!), but the thrill of a great performance remains timeless. Here’s how to enjoy your night out, from arrival to encore, with ease and excitement. | 🎟 Get Your Tickets with a Tap Gone are the box office lines—most tickets are now digital. Sign up for email alerts from artists or venues to snag presale access, and use trusted platforms like Ticketmaster or Live Nation. If you prefer a paper ticket, some venues offer mail delivery for an extra fee—just be sure to order early. | 🏟 Know the Lay of the Land Before the show, visit the venue’s website to find info on parking, seating maps, and accessibility services. Many larger venues now offer wheelchair-accessible entrances, elevators, and even golf cart shuttles from the parking lot. If stairs are tricky, request accessible seating or early entry options—they're often just a phone call away. | 👟 Dress for Comfort (and Dancing!) Skip the stilettos and go for supportive shoes—you may be doing more walking than expected. Weather can shift quickly at outdoor shows, so a light jacket or portable poncho can be a smart move. And don't forget: personal handheld fans and cushioned seat pads are welcome lifesavers in summer venues. | 📱 Use Your Phone—but Stay Present Phones are helpful for tickets, flashlight mode, or hailing a ride home, but resist the urge to record the whole concert. Most artists appreciate fans being in the moment. If you’re not tech-savvy, ask a friend or family member to help you set up your mobile ticket in advance. | 🚗 Getting There and Getting Home Avoid post-show chaos by planning your exit ahead of time. Check if the venue offers senior shuttles or designated pick-up zones for rideshares. Leaving a few minutes before the final bow can help you beat the crowd and get home comfortably. | 🎶 Be Courteous in the Crowd Whether you’re toe-tapping in your seat or swaying with the crowd, a little concert courtesy goes a long way. Be aware of those around you, and don’t be shy to ask staff if you need help finding a quieter area or navigating steps. | From doo-wop to disco, rock to R&B, concerts are still magical—just with a few modern upgrades. So grab your comfy shoes, charge your phone, and let the music take you away. | 🎤 What’s Your Concert Style These Days? | |
