On this day in 1954, history made a groundbreaking leap when the world’s first nuclear power station began operation in Obninsk, near Moscow. The reactor served both as a prototype for civilian atomic power and a symbol of scientific ambition during the Cold War era, running for 48 years and paving the way for nuclear energy worldwide. This moment marked the start of a new era—where science, innovation, and electricity would forever be linked.
Nutrition Needs That Change After 50
As we age, our bodies continue to do incredible things—but they do require some extra support along the way. Once we hit 50, our nutritional needs begin to shift in subtle but important ways. Hormonal changes, a slowing metabolism, and changing muscle mass mean that the fuel we give our bodies matters more than ever.
One of the biggest changes is a decrease in calorie needs, while nutrient needs either stay the same or even increase. That means every bite counts! Instead of cutting back drastically, it’s smarter to make your meals work harder for you by focusing on nutrient-dense foods. Think colorful vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. These provide the essential vitamins and minerals without excess calories or sugar.
Calcium and vitamin D become especially important after 50, especially for women, to help maintain strong bones and prevent osteoporosis. Dairy, leafy greens, almonds, and fortified foods are good sources. Magnesium, too, supports muscle and nerve function and is often overlooked. Adding foods like nuts, legumes, and whole grains can help fill the gap.
Protein needs may increase slightly after 50 to help preserve muscle mass, which naturally declines with age. This doesn’t mean loading up on red meat—fish, eggs, tofu, beans, and yogurt are all excellent, lower-fat sources. It’s a good idea to include a little protein at every meal to keep energy levels stable and support strength.
Heart health also becomes more of a focus, so keeping an eye on saturated fat, sodium, and added sugars is key. Instead, incorporate heart-friendly foods like oats, salmon, olive oil, and lots of fiber-rich produce.
Hydration also becomes more important—even though our sense of thirst may decrease. Water, herbal teas, and water-rich foods like cucumbers, melons, and soups can help you stay on track.
Finally, a daily multivitamin can help fill in the gaps, especially if you have dietary restrictions. But it’s best to talk to a doctor or dietitian before adding supplements, since your individual needs may vary.
Your 50s (and beyond!) are a great time to treat your body with kindness and care. Small, sustainable changes can lead to better energy, stronger bones, and a whole lot more vitality in your days.

Yesterday’s Poll Results: How do you use travel credit cards?

When it comes to travel credit cards, opinions are split! A strong 36% of respondents use them regularly and maximize their points, while another 18% keep one on hand for major trips. But nearly a third of participants either find them too confusing or prefer to stick with cash or debit—proof that while rewards are tempting, simplicity still rules for many travelers.
TOP COMMENTS
“We use our travel cards to build up points/dollars that we then use to offset air fares. We're going to use a credit card anyway, might as well get a benefit from the use. For the record, we pay the credit card balance in full every month (in fact my wife checks the charges daily to ensure no fraudulent charges have been made and then pays whatever balance is on the card).”
“I use points from cards for gift cards since I don't travel.”
“We love the perks that come with the travel credit card - the priority boarding, lounge access, etc. We always have to travel through a hub since we don't live in a hub city, so we appreciate the lounge access for those layovers.”

Slang Phrase of the Day
Phrase: Gatekeep
Meaning: To control or limit access to something, often by deciding who is “in” or “out” of a group, activity, or idea—sometimes unfairly or unnecessarily.

Good News of the Day
A Golden Gesture: Kansas Farmer Celebrates 20 Years of Love
In a heartfelt tribute to his wife Sarah, Kansas farmer Jesse Blasi transformed his wheat field into a one-mile-long love letter for their 20th wedding anniversary. Using advanced farming techniques, Jesse planted over 65 million red wheat seeds to spell out “Jesse + Sarah 20 Years” across their Pratt farm. The surprise remained a secret until Sarah viewed the aerial message from a small plane, capturing her emotional reaction. Inspired by a similar gesture from another Kansas farmer, Jesse's creation is expected to remain visible until the fall harvest.
