Part-Time Work in Retirement: Finding the Right Balance

Retirement doesn't always mean a complete departure from the workforce. For many Americans over 50, part-time work offers an appealing middle ground between full-time employment and full retirement. This growing trend, often called "semi-retirement," provides both financial benefits and personal fulfillment.

The financial advantages are clear: supplemental income can help preserve retirement savings and delay Social Security benefits, potentially increasing future monthly payments. Even earning $1,000 monthly through part-time work can significantly reduce the need to draw from retirement accounts, allowing investments more time to grow.

However, the benefits extend beyond finances. Many retirees find that part-time work provides structure, social interaction, and a sense of purpose. Whether it's consulting in your former field, working at a local garden center, or teaching at a community center, these roles can keep you mentally sharp and connected to your community.

The key is finding the right balance. Consider starting with 15-20 hours per week, which leaves ample time for hobbies, family, and relaxation. Look for flexible positions that accommodate travel plans and don't create undue stress. Many employers specifically seek mature workers for their experience, reliability, and strong work ethic.

Before jumping in, evaluate how part-time work might affect your Social Security benefits and tax situation. If you're under full retirement age and receiving Social Security, earnings above certain thresholds may temporarily reduce your benefits. Consulting with a financial advisor can help you make informed decisions about work and retirement.

Reminiscing… One of My Favourite Pastimes!

One of the lovely things as we age is the number of memories we have collected and stored in our memory bank. I find it such a joy to spend some time thinking of the people and events in my life, and it fills my heart with such happiness.

Of course, family, and especially loved ones who I have lost, are always top of the list. I can still conjure up the scent of my mum’s favourite perfume, my dad’s spicy aftershave and the earthy aroma of my grandfather’s pipe. Though the indescribable smell of my newborn babies is, by far, the most evocative of them all.

Longevity Tip of the Day

Make peace with family — While we often stress about small stuff — the guests are here, and we’re not ready! — it’s the nagging, long-running forms of stress, such as a family dispute, that put your longevity at risk. Chronic stress hastens the cellular deterioration that leads to premature aging and a vast array of serious diseases, according to long-running research from the University of California, San Francisco. This sort of cell death “turns out to be one of the strongest predictors of early diseases of aging and in many studies of early mortality,” says lead researcher Elissa Epel. The remedy: Come to peace with the people in your life. Forgive your family, forgive yourself, put the past behind you — so you can have more life in front of you.

Slang Phrase of the Day

Phrase: Finesse
Meaning: Finesse means to trick or manipulate someone or a situation in order to get what you want.
In a sentence: "I finessed him into thinking I wanted the last scone, when really I wanted the strudel. He took the scone and I got my strudel."
