By: G. W. Conklin Two years ago, Cape May was shaken by a series of murders that reached into the very heart of the town's social elite. Now, America’s oldest seaside resort has returned to being the peaceful place its visitors love so much. That all changes when a troubled war hero and son of Cape May is murdered in the very shadow of Cape May’s iconic lighthouse. |
By: Lily Jacobson My CEO boss was safe when he was just a voice on Zoom. Now he’s staying at my family’s inn in my small hometown. He’s charming my family and asking questions about the secret project I’ve been hiding for years. And making it very hard to remember one rule: don’t fall for your boss. |

Restoring Furniture: Basics of Refinishing and Repair
Old furniture often carries stories, memories, and craftsmanship that newer pieces sometimes lack. Instead of throwing away worn or scratched items, many people are discovering the satisfaction of restoring furniture. With a few basic tools and some patience, you can refresh chairs, tables, dressers, and other pieces while preserving their character.
The first step in furniture restoration is evaluating the condition of the piece. Look for structural issues such as loose joints, cracked wood, or missing hardware. Minor problems like loose screws or wobbly legs are usually easy to fix with wood glue, clamps, or replacement fasteners. Tightening joints and reinforcing weak areas helps ensure the furniture is safe and stable before moving on to cosmetic improvements.
Once the structure is sound, the next step is refinishing the surface. Many older pieces have layers of worn varnish, scratches, or faded color. Light sanding is often the starting point for refinishing, as it removes old finish and smooths the wood. For heavily coated surfaces, a furniture stripper may be needed to remove thick layers of paint or varnish. Always work in a well-ventilated area and follow product instructions carefully.
After sanding, the wood is ready for staining or painting. Stains help highlight the natural grain of the wood, giving furniture a classic and polished look. Paint, on the other hand, can completely transform a piece with a new color or style. Some people choose neutral tones for a timeless appearance, while others enjoy bold colors that add personality to a room.
Once the desired color is applied, a protective finish is essential. Clear sealants such as polyurethane or furniture wax help protect the surface from scratches, moisture, and daily wear. This finishing step also adds depth and shine, making the restored piece look refreshed and professionally finished.
Small details can make a big difference in the final result. Replacing worn knobs or handles, polishing metal hardware, and adding felt pads to the bottom of legs can give furniture a polished, updated appearance. These simple touches often make older pieces feel almost brand new again.
Furniture restoration can be both practical and rewarding. Not only does it extend the life of quality pieces, but it can also save money and reduce waste. For many people, the process becomes a relaxing hobby that combines creativity with hands-on craftsmanship.
Whether you are restoring a family heirloom or giving new life to a thrift-store find, refinishing furniture can be a satisfying way to refresh your home while preserving the charm of older pieces.

Yesterday’s Poll Results: How often do you schedule preventive health screenings?

The poll shows that the majority of respondents—70%—are diligent about staying fully up to date with all recommended preventive health screenings, reflecting a strong commitment to maintaining their health. Another 13% get most screenings but occasionally fall behind, while 8% rely on reminders from their doctor to schedule them. A smaller portion, 6%, rarely schedule screenings, and 3% aren’t sure which screenings they should be getting. Overall, these results highlight that most people recognize the importance of preventive care, though a few could benefit from more guidance or reminders.
TOP COMMENTS
“I would like to get more preventive screening. Unfortunately, insurance often determines what I qualify for and how much they will pay. Often feel like the insurance companies are in charge of my health, not me or my doctor.”
“I stay on top of my screenings because I don't want to find out too late what I have can't be fixed or I cannot be made comfortable again. Life is too short to not take care of yourself.”
“I attempt to stay current with mine and I remind my wife about hers; she just doesn't listen very well. She has macular degeneration and does keep up with the shots in her eyes. I'm waiting to see the cardiologist, due to a slow heart rate issue.”
Letting Go of the “Revenge” Mindset After Divorce
After a difficult divorce, it’s common to imagine ways of proving an ex-partner wrong or “getting even.” While these thoughts may feel satisfying in the moment, focusing on revenge can keep people emotionally tied to the past and slow the healing process. Shifting attention toward personal growth, new goals, and rebuilding confidence often brings far more lasting peace. Moving forward with purpose—rather than resentment—can help create a healthier and more fulfilling next chapter.

Slang Phrase of the Day
Phrase: Big yikes energy
Meaning: A humorous way to describe a situation or behavior that is especially awkward, embarrassing, or uncomfortable to witness. It’s often used when someone says or does something that makes others cringe or shake their heads.
In a sentence: “When Harold tried to explain how to use a smartphone but accidentally turned on the flashlight and called three people at once, the whole room had a good laugh and someone said it had a little big yikes energy.”
Good News of the Day
New Technology Could Help Protect Hedgehogs from Deadly Roads
Scientists have discovered that hedgehogs can hear ultrasonic frequencies—sounds too high for humans to detect—which may open the door to a new conservation solution. Researchers are exploring the idea of installing ultrasonic emitters on cars or machinery that would quietly warn hedgehogs away from danger before vehicles approach. Since road traffic is responsible for a significant portion of hedgehog deaths, this technology could help reduce roadkill and support the recovery of declining hedgehog populations.
