Internet deals (and more) for seniors

It is Wednesday, May 15th, 2024

Dear RetireHub Daily Readers, it’s another Wednesday hump day. So it’s time for some entertainment.

If only burgers still cost 15 cents …

On this day in 1940, the world was first introduced to McDonald’s. Brother Richard and Maurice McDonald opened their first fast-food restaurant in San Bernardino, California. Some eight decades later, McDonald’s is the world’s second-largest employer and sixth most profitable business in the world.

Deal of the Day

Clothing, kitchenware, beauty products, it’s all on sale in the Dillard’s Clearance event! Women's dresses start from $10, women's flats from $20, men's jeans mostly from $24.49, men's boat shoes from $30, and men's sneakers from $40.

Reading aids to keep us reading

Past a certain age (we won’t say which age exactly), books can be a little trickier for us to navigate. Smaller type gets harder to read and some of us can have trouble grasping heavier books for long periods.

Even if books aren’t your thing, there are manuals, fine print, bills and other things that get harder to read as we age.

But not to worry, there are options out there to help us keep reading—even if it is for bills.

  • Magnifying App—the Brighter and Bigger app is like having zoom-able reading glasses. It uses your phone camera to magnify, brighten, and zoom so you can get the big picture from fine print. Available for Android or Apple.

  • Hand-held magnifying glass—the Vive Health LED Magnifying Glass is a good choice for those who prefer not to use their phone. Highly reviewed, it provides a clear light and comes with easily switchable lenses. Available for $10.99, with 10% off your first order if you enter your email.

  • Hands-free reading light—the Glocusent Neck Reading Light is a rechargeable, long-lasting, and comfortable reading light for those who like to read in bed. It’s flexible arms let you find the perfect angle for you. Available at Amazon for &18.99.

  • Text-to-speech app—Speechify is “the #1 speech app in the world”. If you struggle to read web pages, use it to read the page to you. You can even make it read in Gwyneth Paltrow or Snoop Dog’s voice! The basic version is free to use.

  • Audiobooks—you can of course simply turn to audiobooks, using an app such as Audible (which is $14.95 a month) or on Spotify, which has started adding many audiobooks. Audiobooks can be a fun way to read—many authors read their own books, while others use professional voice actors for a fun experience.

Let us know if you’ve used any of the reading assistants we’ve mentioned—and leave recommendationsons and reviews we can share with others. Happy reading!

Yesterday’s Poll Results - How comfortable do you feel using technology to track your health?

With healthcare tech booming, it’s no wonder 70% of RetireHub Daily readers are at least comfortable with using healthcare tech, while 15% don’t want to use healthcare tech. While tech is a great option for those with accessibility issues, let’s hope we never lose the important in-person time with healthcare pros.

Thanks to everyone who voted and commented!

Our Favorite Comments:

We love hearing and sharing comments from our polls! While we can’t publish them all, we do read and appreciate every comment.

  • “We use our patient portals with several of our doctors and our hospital to get information and renew scripts, etc.”

  • “I prefer real people taking care of me.”

  • “I am growing into the thing... I had previously been feeling distanced from the medical community.. As wait times for appointments get longer and physician specialties become more challenging to navigate. Now, I feel very connected!”

SENIOR LIVING NEWS

One of my most favorite hacks is to make a deal with myself earlier in the morning that I’ll eat a tiny dinner at 6 p.m. and then will go to my bedroom early – at 8 p.m. – to read a phenomenal book for an hour or two.

Every book on this list is a delicious marvel of a story.

Investing during retirement to maximize returns can be a great way to generate a little extra income and make sure there is enough to last in the long term. But it’s important to look at the best investments for retirement, as well as timing your withdrawals to make the most of your money.

Key Takeaways

•For most people, retirement means relying on a combination of Social Security payments and retirement savings.

•When strategizing which portion of your savings to use first, it’s important to consider the dividends you can earn by leaving some assets in place longer.

•As you progress through your retirement years, you’ll need to periodically stop and reassess your strategy, adjusting it to match your current status.

Slang of the Day

Word: “Main character moment”

Definition: This term can be positive or negative. When someone is having a “main character moment”, they feel like the star of a movie no one is watching.

Used in a Sentence: “There he goes again, having his main character moment.”

GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY

A university concert pianist has made an unlikely nest for herself while she continues her studies: an old age home.

In exchange for her stay at the home, Beth Christensen is encouraged to immerse herself in the community as much as possible in addition to the routine piano performances.

Relying on a supercomputer and the people with talent enough to use it, NASA scientists have produced a video illustration of what it would be like to float into a black hole if you were somehow invincible.

Several versions of the same simulation are explained in a 4-minute video released by NASA that offers visual aids to some extremely complex physics.
