Moriondoâs patent for the espresso machine. | On this day in 1884, Angelo Moriondo patented the worldâs first âespressoâ machine. This was first ever steam-powered coffee brewer. However, what it made wasnât like modern espresso. It was more like the coffee youâd find in a diner. But still, Moriondoâs invention was the beginning of a long journey to the machines in your local independent coffee shop. |

RETIREHUB POLL
Do you plan to visit more of the US in your retirement? |
Hidden Gems at Home
Weâre lucky to live somewhere as vast and varied as America. With international air travel (and everything else!) becoming increasingly expensive, it could be worth looking closer to home for new adventures in retirement.
Here are some destinations for domestic travel:
Emerald Isle, NCâa quaint costal town hidden away on North Carolinaâs Crystal Coast. With a name like that youâd expect nice beaches, and you wonât be disappointed.
Destin, Floridaâboasting 27 golf courses and a reputation as âthe worldâs luckiest fishing villageâ, Destin makes for a great senior destination off the usual Florida beat.
Jekyll Island, Georgiaâoff the coast of Georgia, Jekyll Island has beaches and plenty of marine activities to keep you entertained outdoors.
La Jolla, CAâcombine the best of the coast with a charming beachside town. Known for its seafood restaurants and spectacular sunsets, this is the Golden State at its best.
Branson, Missouriâthe Ozarks are a lesser discussed but no less stunning mountain range in Missouri. Take in the view on a scenic train ride or dinner cruise between enjoying the townâs lively entertainment.
Yesterdayâs Poll Results - What's your preferred way to read a book?
You canât beat a good old-fashioned book, so say 54% of RetireHub Daily readers. Though 29% like to use an e-reader, and many of you pointed out that e-readers are a great option for traveling and ease of use. Happy reading!
Thanks to everyone who voted and commented!
Our Favorite Comments:
We love hearing and sharing comments from our polls! While we canât publish them all, we do read and appreciate every comment.
âWhile in-hand, hardcopy is my preference, I do use a reader. I can not afford to financially support my reading habit in retirement. I download free books and occasionally use the library.â
âNothing like something you can give to the next personâ
âI love to read physical books, but my eyesight is not good enough. That's where the Kindle comes in. I can adjust the lighting and the font of the text.â
âThis type of reading [audiobooks] allows me to multitask. Working in garage, etc.â

Look back over the years and if youâre lucky, youâll have clocked up a fair few holidays. Sun-soaked beaches, less-than-perfect campsites, city wanderings.
Where do you find those memorable holiday moments now? Not surprisingly, as we age, so our tastes and demands change.
With mild weather and plenty of scenic destinations, North Carolina has become a popular place for relocating retirees.
Key Takeaways
â˘North Carolina has a little bit of everything, from a mild climate to beaches and mountains.
â˘There are plenty of options for retiring in North Carolina, whether youâre looking for a scenic coastal town to a large city.
â˘When looking for good places to live in North Carolina after retirement, consider healthcare, access to amenities, and the 65-plus population in the area.
Travel Tip of the Day:
Roll up those socks, save spaceâif you pack an extra pair of shoes for your vacation, save some space and roll your socks up into little balls, then stuff them in each show. Provided your shoes are kept fresh and fragrance-free, this tip can save crucial luggage space!
Slang of the Day
Word: âSimpâ
Definition: From the lesser-heard word âsimperingâ that you may have often read in romance novels, someone is being a âsimpâ when they are hopelessly doing too much for someone they have an obvious crush on.
Used in a Sentence: âHeâs driving her here, there, and everywhere every day. What a simp!â
GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY
Middle-aged and older adults believe that old age begins later in life than their peers did decades ago according to a new study.
Itâs enough to put a bit of spring chicken back into the feet of a silver fox, and the study found that people tended to view being old as occurring later and later as they advanced through life, showing age is even less than a numberâitâs just a mindset.
After less than a year of treatment with an experimental new cancer drug, a young woman has seen her tumor vanish, along with her fears that she would never be able to carry another child.
Spill was just the fourth person to receive dostarlimabâwhich she took as an injection every week for six months. After her fourth treatment, Spill got the newsâher tumor had shrunk to half its original size.
