How journaling can help us

Journaling might sound like work, but it has many benefits. It can help us store memories and prevent memory decline. Aside from the science-y stuff, writing can just help us make sense of the thoughts in our head.

If you’d like to try journaling, here are some easy tips:

  • Use prompts—any writer will tell you (including the editor of this newsletter) that the hardest part is starting. There are plenty of free prompt resources online for you to try, such as this one.

  • Make it a habit—habits don’t form easily, but if you make something part of your routine it’s likelier to stick. Try writing before bed instead of watching TV.

  • Make it easy—like the last point, the easier something is the more likely you’ll do it. Have a space nearby where you keep your notebook out, somewhere you pass every day. You’ll be more likely to stick to it.

  • Set a timer—if you feel like you don’t have time for journaling, make time. Set a timer for 5, 15, 25 minutes and just write until the alarm goes off.

  • Try voice memos—both the iPhone and Android devices have voice recorder apps. This is a great option if you struggle to write, and still lets you sort through your thoughts and record your memories.

So many amazing things happen in each of our lives. Hopefully these tips help you to start journaling and recording those moments.

Yesterday’s Poll Results - Have you tried meditation?

🧘 RetireHub Daily readers were divided on this one! While 36% aren’t interested in meditation (fair enough), 64% have either tried it or are interested in trying it. Only 7% meditate regularly though.

Thanks to everyone who voted and commented!

SENIOR LIVING NEWS

Do you look forward to the new day as you get up in the morning? Is there something that propels you out of a warm, cozy bed to dance into the day ahead?

There have been periods throughout my life when I hit the snooze or I didn’t even bother to set an alarm. Those were times when I couldn’t see a reason to get out of bed. Sleep was my refuge.

Someone who dies intestate died without a legal will. If there’s no will, what happens next depends on whether the person was married or has other relatives.

Key Takeaways

•Intestate is a legal term for someone who dies without a will.

•If you die intestate, local probate courts will distribute your assets based on laws in your state.

•Typically, all assets go to immediate family first, including a spouse or any surviving children.

This garlic hummus recipe couldn't be easier—just toss a few ingredients in the food processor and whir away!

  • Special equipment: food processor

  • 1 (15 ounce) can no-salt-added chickpeas

  • ¼ cup tahini

  • ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil

  • ¼ cup lemon juice

  • 1 clove garlic

  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin

  • ½ teaspoon chili powder

  • ½ teaspoon salt

Unusual Hobby of the Day

Hobby: Ant Keeping

Think: Bee keeping … but with ants.

What’s the point? Ants belong to the same family of insects as bees and wasps (take a look at a flying ant next time they invade your lawn). They form complex societies ruled by ruthless queens. While you won’t get honey, you may still be entertained.

GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY

Overhunting during the 1920s and 1930s led these massive blue-grey giants to abandon their ancestral waters in Argentina.

“After nearly a century of being hunted to near extinction, sei whale populations are now bouncing back and returning to their former habitats,” said Mariano Coscarella, a biologist and marine ecosystem researcher at Argentina’s CONICET scientific agency.

A rare win for conservation was just scored in the fast-developing Travis County, Texas, where 30 minutes from Austin’s busy tech sector, music venues, and barbeque spots, a historic family ranch has just been converted into a public park.

The family made the decision to lose $40 million by opting to sell the property for parkland instead of to developers.
