Things to think about when choosing an Active Retirement Community

Do you enjoy living where you do? Or are you dreaming of an Active Retirement Community? They aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but can offer safety, routine, and community for senior folks.

Here’s a quick list of tips to do when choosing an Active Retirement Community:

  • Consider Costs—Many retirement communities will have large upfront costs to enter, even if you will be renting rather than owning. Decide on what costs you’re comfortable with first, so you aren’t disappointed.

  • Look up neighborhood statistics—you or a family member can research the area online. Even a google search of “[area] crime statistics” can give you valuable information.

  • Visit and speak to staff and residents—you can learn a lot about a place by speaking to those who experience it every day. Don’t just take the manager’s word for it, speak to everyone you can.

  • Make sure the amenities match your interests—just because a place has great reviews doesn’t mean it’s right for you. Make sure the available activities will bring you your kind of enjoyment in your golden years.

  • Ask about future plans—do you want to spend years in a construction site? While improvements and repairs are welcome, make sure you know what you’re in for.

We hope these tips are helpful for you or a loved when when planning your future. Please let us know any other topics that could be useful for your retirement.

“Unrepentant fun” (New York Times bestselling author James Swallow): James Flynn is convinced he’s a heroic secret agent. And when he sneaks out of his psychiatric hospital, he’s mistaken for the real deal! This “funny farce” is “delightfully absurd” (Kirkus Reviews).

SENIOR LIVING NEWS

In the fast-paced, ever-changing world we live in, lasting relationships have become increasingly precious and vital.

Here’s how different relationships can provide a sense of belonging, security, and personal fulfillment.

Decumulation is complicated. No one knows how long they’re going to live. You need a strategy that plans for the longest horizon.

Key Takeaways

•Decumulation planning requires determining your income needs every year through retirement.

•The process is difficult to navigate because there are so many unknowns to plan around.

•Understanding what kind of lifestyle you want, and can afford, in retirement is a great starting point.

Replace chip bowls with pepper plates—everyone loves a snack. But those chips we’re used to munching on aren’t good for us (plus, they get stuck in your teeth!). Try replacing chips bowls with washed, sliced, sweet peppers. They taste sweet and refreshing, with a satisfying crunch. Unlike chips, they contain fibre and whole range of longevity-boosting vitamins.

Slang Word of the Day

Slang: Lewks

Meaning: Refers to a person’s or group’s fashion or particular outfit (think “looks” but said in a funny voice).

In a sentence: “I love the lewks at this retirement community!”

GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY

A 21-year-old is helping the elderly in senior homes stay fit with his boxing lessons that elevate focus and fun.

Bailey-Greetham Clark now travels around Lincolnshire, England, making fitness and sports accessible to schools, hospitals, community centers and senior care homes.

A recent study that looked at the effects of European bison on the ability of forests in Romania to store carbon found that these large animals have a ‘heroic’ effect.

Bison help forests store more carbon, with conservationists estimating that the herd of 170 bison will help store carbon emissions equal to 54,000 US cars.
