Things to consider when investing your retirement nest egg

Investing can make your money grow dividends—literally! But it can be confusing or intimidating. If you’re curious about investing your retirement savings, here are some things to consider*:

  • Proceed with caution—given that you don’t have a job in retirement, you don’t have the steady income to make up for losses. Most experts recommend seniors choose lower-risk investing, even though the returns can be lower.

  • Make time work for you—investments are a long game. If you invest your nest egg sooner, there’s more of it (because you haven’t spent it all yet) and it has longer to grow.

  • FDIC-insured accounts provide protection—these federally-protected accounts keep your investments insured up to $250,000.

  • Diversity provides security—Maybe you have a lot of cash savings but what about other options? Could you invest in property you could make an income from?

*This isn’t financial advice, just things to consider. Speak to a qualified financial advisor before making any investments, and explore resources like retirable.com.

Our Favorite Comments:

We love hearing and sharing comments from our polls! While we can’t publish them all, we do read and appreciate every comment.

  • “After 40 years owning this was a good option. As usual good & bad you have to make the best of it. No more repairs & rent is reasonable. I think this was a good idea for me. Do I miss owning yes hard to get use to rules but I think in the long run this option suits me.”

  • “After my stroke, I can no longer my yard work, and in one of those communities they take care of that for me.”

  • “Just moved and enjoying every minute. Surrounded by fun, caring people. Wish we had done it sooner.”

  • “Would prefer a more intergenerational setting.”

  • “Unfortunately, only a few years "in", we had to leave our comfortable independent living community due to our dwindling financial resources. Heartbreaking.....”

SENIOR LIVING NEWS

It can be challenging to buy a gift for your senior family members or friends who have visual impairment. You want gifts to be useful and make your loved one’s life easier.

This list contains 8 useful products and devices that would make great gifts for visually impaired individuals.

Balancing your savings and pensions in retirement against your expenses can be tricky. Here are some tips to help you manage your savings alongside your pension for monthly income.

Key Takeaways

•Pensions give you a predictable monthly income that can combine well with your Social Security payments.

•As with Social Security, though, you’ll likely have to supplement your pension with some of your retirement savings.

•The smaller the amount you take out of your savings each month, the better, and integrating your pension with your retirement savings can help.

LONGEVITY TIP OF THE DAY

Block out the noise—a good quality sleep makes all the difference. And not just to our mood in the morning. Blocking out noise helps us enter, and stay in, deep sleep. Ear plugs are a good affordable option (though take some getting used to).

Slang of the Day

Word: “Menty B”

Definition: A play on mental breakdown, Menty B is used semi-ironically to describe moments that are extremely stressful, though not necessarily deserving of a mental breakdown.

Used in a Sentence: “I used to feel like I was having a Menty B whenever I thought about retirement—but not any more!”

GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY

As Vermont State University Castleton graduates receive their degrees this weekend, so too will a tabby cat. The cat, named Max, is getting an honorary degree as a "Doctor in Litter-ature."

Once a feral kitten in the town of Fair Haven, Max has lived with his human mom, Ashley Dow, on Seminary Street in Castleton for the past five years. And for most of those years, he’s been venturing up to the university campus.

A senior who had suffered from type-2 diabetes for 25 years hasn’t taken insulin for 33 months after he received a regenerative islet cell transplantation.

This new breakthrough, coming after 10 years of research and testing, may change approaches to treatment forever.
