Finance: 401(k) plan

Definition: An employer-sponsored retirement plan where employees can contribute their pre-tax income, frequently supplemented by additional funds provided by the employer, that can grow tax-free.

Medical Word: BMI

Definition: Body mass index, the most widely used measure of weight relative to height. A normal BMI for an adult is between 18.5 and 24.9.

Slang Word of the Day: L

Definition: Another simple letter-turned-slang, L is the opposite of a W—meaning a loss rather than a win.

Used in a Sentence: “The Cowboys handed the Eagles an L the other night.”

Longevity Tip Of The Day

Frozen is fine — You can eat a balanced diet even when fresh fruits and vegetables are out of season because frozen can be as good as or even better for life-extending nutrients. British scientists found that fresh fruit can lose nutrients after three days of refrigeration, while frozen fruits don’t suffer the same fate. Another study similarly found that frozen blueberries contained more vitamin C than fresh ones.

Family of Maine shooting suspect says his mental health had deteriorated rapidly

• The family of the Army reservist accused of fatally shooting more than a dozen people in Lewiston, Maine, alerted police and military officials that he was experiencing an “acute” mental health episode before the Wednesday night massacre, his sister-in-law said.

• Robert Card, 40, a firearms instructor and longtime member of the Army Reserve, began to hear voices that were saying “horrible” things about him a couple of months ago when he was fitted for high-powered hearing aids, said Katie Card, who is married to his brother.
