Tropical Fruits: Variety is the Spice of Nutrition
They say that “variety is the spice of life” since without it, we would probably find life to be a little dull and boring, to say the least. In my opinion, the same can be said of getting the nutrition we need from the foods we eat. Imagine if you had a diet that was indeed healthy but consisted of only one or two foods? How long would you stick to eating just brown rice, kale, and grilled chicken, for example, before you started to explore other – and probably less healthy and nutritious – options? My guess is not long.
I love fruits. Fruits, along with veggies, are, in fact, the cornerstone of my diet. They are unprocessed and very rich in nutrients and are key to our overall health and wellbeing. Unfortunately, some diets do not place enough emphasis on how important natural, nutrient-dense foods are.
Words of the Day
Finance Term: Health savings account (HSA)
Definition: A type of savings account that lets you set aside money on a pre-tax basis to pay for qualified medical expenses. By using untaxed dollars in an HSA to pay for deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, and some other expenses, you may be able to lower your out-of-pocket health care costs.
Medical Term: Biopsy
Definition: A tissue sample for testing purposes
Slang Word of the Day: Fan service
Definition: Elements added to an entertainment piece that is a subtle nod to avid fans, like an inside joke that other viewers won’t understand. Also known as easter eggs.
Used in a Sentence: “I love in the Marvel movies how they always slip in little pieces of fan service for those of us who read the original comics.”
Longevity Tip Of The Day
Say yes to that extra cup — Coffee does more than help you wake up; it also reduces your risk of stroke, diabetes and some cancers. And in a 2015 study published in the journal Circulation, Harvard researchers discovered that “people who drank three to five cups of coffee per day had about a 15 percent lower [risk of premature] mortality compared to people who didn’t drink coffee,” says coauthor Walter Willett, M.D. Mind you, a cup is 8 ounces, so your 16-ounce Starbucks grande is really two cups by that measure.
