Meaning And Purpose in Retirement: A Surprising Sage

Retirement Syndrome is a term used globally to describe the common feelings one might have upon retirement: disorientation, loss of purpose and identity, the fear of too much time on one’s hands, and possible feelings of isolation. It is estimated that 1 in 3 retirees suffer from these transition difficulties and struggle to adjust. Many of us a few years down the road in retirement might experience some of these feelings periodically, even with a new life plan in place.

Endless books and posts suggest the same menu for “finding meaning” in one’s later years: hobbies, volunteer work, travel, part-time jobs, exercise, engagements with friends and family, and giving in to leisure pursuits. The reason they are so universal is because they work!

How to Find and Choose a Financial Advisor

It can be nerve-wracking to find and hire a financial advisor—you want to be sure you’re picking someone who has the right experience, education, and knows what to do with your money, paying close attention to special needs and requests. Knowing which questions to ask and the specific kind of advisor you need for your assets is the key to finding one that will help you build wealth and prepare for the future.

Some advisors focus on one particular area—such as taxes or estate planning—while others can help with a broad picture of your assets and how to better invest and save. It’s important, before you begin your search, to identify what kind of advice you need help with so you look for the right kind of advisor for the task.

Longevity Tip Of The Day

Go nuts — In a European study of adults ages 55 to 69, those who ate 10 grams of nuts daily — 8 almonds or 6 cashews — reduced their risk of death from any health-related cause by 23 percent. As for specific ailments, consuming a handful of nuts at least five times per week lowers the mortality risk for heart disease (by 29 percent), respiratory disease (24 percent) and cancer (11 percent), according to a previous U.S. study. Sorry, peanut butter fans: Spreads didn’t show the same benefits.

Slang Word Of The Day

Choose A Book And Read To Your Barber, He'll Take A Little Money Off The Top

  • Jozef Jason came to the Fuller Cut barbershop for one reason: the kid's mohawk. It's almost second-grade picture day, and he wants to look good. He hops up onto an antique swivel chair and asks his barber for the new 'do.

  • "It's high on the top and short on the bottom, and lines that go in a diagonal line where the top is gonna be," explains the 7-year-old.

  • Jozef came for the mohawk, but his dad, Keith Jason, chose this barbershop over all the others in Ypsilanti — a working-class town just outside Ann Arbor, Mich. — for a different reason. At the Fuller Cut, kids get a $2 discount if they read a book aloud to their barber.

For years, an Arkansas man walked 5 miles to work. Then hundreds in his community formed a makeshift rideshare service.

  • Just as the sun begins to set over the Walmart in Cabot, Arkansas, store janitor Bill Moczulewski begins walking to work for his overnight shift. He will trek five miles in each direction, two hours roundtrip, in any weather.

  • "I don't call out," Moczulewski said. "I want to work."

  • A couple years ago, Christy Conrad saw Moczulewski out walking and offered him a ride. She got to know him, learning about his daunting daily commute and how he is also legally blind. So, she began driving him whenever she could. At least that's how it started.
