SENIOR LIVING NEWS
Where’s Your Command Center?
When my dear friend fell and broke her wrist, we all hopped too. Rides, laundry, house cleaning, meals, and check-ins. During one of our calls, we went over the usual pre-surgery standard logistics checklist, including: Who is picking you up? Does the pharmacy have your post-surgery meds? And the quintessential question: Do you have enough soup?
Then, I asked her, “Where is your command center?”
She said, “Huh?”
I repeated the question.
She said: “I must really be out of it; I have no idea what you are saying.”
I had to rephrase: “When you get home from the hospital, where will you set up everything you need?”
What is a 401(k)? Choosing a 401(k) Retirement Plan
Odds are, if you’ve ever worked a full-time job, you’ve come across a 401(k) plan at some point. Many companies offer 401(k) retirement plans as part of your compensation package. They may even offer to contribute a percentage of your salary to it. But what, exactly, is a 401(k) plan? How does it differ from other types of retirement accounts, and how does it fit into your overall financial and retirement plan?
A 401(k) is a retirement savings plan that allows you to put aside a percentage of your salary into an investment account. It’s an easy way to set and forget your retirement savings, as your contribution will be automatically deducted from your paycheck. With a traditional 401(k), your contribution will be made pre-tax – you won’t pay any income tax on that portion of your salary, and will instead pay taxes when you withdraw the funds in retirement.
LONGEVITY TIP OF THE DAY
Beware the high-tech dash — Nearly one in five traffic accidents and more than 400,000 crash-related injuries involve a distracted driver, the U.S. Department of Transportation reports. Top distractions, according to a recent Virginia Tech Transportation Institute study, are cellphones. But a less-obvious risk is using the touch screen on your car’s dashboard.
SLANG WORD OF THE DAY
Word: CEO
Definition: If you're the CEO of something, it means you've mastered it or you're a pro.
Used in a Sentence: “You were amazing at square dancing last night — giving off real CEO energy.”

All staff quit Mineral Point Dollar General over donation policy dispute
The Dollar General convenience store in Mineral Point faced an unexpected closure over the weekend as all of its employees walked off their shifts and quit their positions.
Customers arriving at the store were met with signs taped to the front door reading ‘we quit’ on both Friday and Saturday. The exit came as all six employees, including the store manager and assistant manager, voiced their concerns of being underpaid, undervalued and overworked by the corporate structure. These photos were posted on the Iowa County Confessions Facebook page:
Staff at a Virginia wildlife center pretend to be red foxes as they care for an orphaned kit
Employees of the Richmond Wildlife Center in Virginia are doing their best to act like mother foxes as they feed and care for an orphaned kit that found her way into their care.
In a video posted to the center’s Facebook page Tuesday, Executive Director Melissa Stanley is shown wearing a red fox mask and rubber gloves while feeding the tiny kit from a syringe. The kit sits on top of a large stuffed animal fox that is supposed to look like her mother, Stanley said.
