The Sultana explosion remains the worst maritime disaster in US history. | On this day in 1865, the steamboat Sultana exploded, killing up to 1800 passengers. The Sultana, carrying many paroled Union prisoners of war, was far over capacity when 3 of its boilers exploded in the spring torrents of the Mississippi River. |

SENIOR LIVING NEWS
I realized early in the process that downsizing from my big-ass house and moving to a condo wasn’t going to be easy. Although it was the right decision at the time, I was overwhelmed by the jaw-clenching enormity of the job.
Being your own boss means you set most of the rules, but it also means you need to take care of administrative tasks that companies usually do for you, including opening and contributing to your own retirement plan—as well as the plans of your employees, if you have any.
Luckily, there are several different retirement plans for self-employed people, each with their own pros, cons, and contribution rules.
LONGEVITY TIP OF THE DAY
Avoid microwaving in plastic containers—Many of us use plastic tupperware to store leftovers. But did you know that when plastic is heated in the microwave, it releases a group of chemicals called phthalates? Phthalates can disrupt the hormone system, and some studies find that those with higher phthalate levels have an increased risk of mortality. If you microwave regularly, consider switching to glass tupperware.
Slang Phrase of the Day
Word: “Vibe“
Definition: The feeling or ambiance of a place/person/thing. If two people are getting along well they can also be said to be “vibing”.
Used in a Sentence: “I prefer that restaurant, it has a better vibe.”
GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY
After saving a woman from drowning in a fast moving canal in Florida, Jakob Thompson, aged 17 at the time, was gifted a prestigious scholarship and honored with the Carnegie Medal for his display of heroism.
Thompson’s scholarship will cover the tuition costs of training to become a firefighter, his dream career.
A collection of great historical artworks, saved from the fires of Notre-Dame, are set to be exhibited as they haven’t been for over 160 years as the famous cathedral nears its reopening this December.
Placed in the side chapels rather than the nave, the paintings escaped the main blaze and suffered only minor water damage.
RETIREHUB TRIVIA
A few RetireHub Daily readers insisted that North Carolina, rather than Ohio, is known as “the birthplace of aviation” following yesterday’s trivia. After careful investigation, we can confirm that Ohio has “The birthplace of aviation” on its license plates, while North Carolina bears “First in flight”, following a truce (Ohio being the State where the Wright brothers were born, NC where the first flight took place). We hope that clears things up!
