This historical fiction follows Ayana Kenes, a peasant girl from Kazakhstan in the Soviet Union, who has unexpectedly risen to the top of the Soviet Space program. It is the dawn of the Space Race in 1957 and the Russians are in a race with the Americans.

100,000 salmon spill off a truck in Oregon. Most land in a creek and live

On a recent morning, while dew was still on the road, there occurred the salmon smolt mishap of Northeast Oregon.

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife said on Tuesday that one of its tankers had been in a crash on March 29, resulting in the escape of thousands of live salmon that were being moved as part of a federal and state program to replenish stocks depleted by dams.

Massachusetts becomes first state to blanket pardon low-level marijuana charges

Massachusetts is now the first state to pardon the crimes of offenders charged with simple pot possession — after President Joe Biden did the same two years ago.

Gov. Maura Healey’s first-in-the-nation plan to issue a blanket pardon for simple marijuana possession was met with the unanimous approval of the Governor’s Council on Wednesday, when councilors expressed broad support but wondered if it went far enough for the potentially hundreds of thousands of people hit by the state’s now-defunct marijuana laws.
