Tips for Successful Budget Management

Retirement can mean approaching our budget differently. Here are a few tips for keeping spending to a comfortable amount that lets you enjoy retirement.

  • Cover the basics first: There’s no avoiding it: You have living costs each month that always need paying. Think of money left over after the essentials as an allowance you can give yourself for fun purchases.

  • Use Budgeting Tools: There’s no need for a calculator and a notepad these days. Online software can make the process easy and accurate. Find a list of digital budgeting tools for seniors here.

  • Cancel what you don’t use: Painful as it may be, take a look through your credit card bill each month. Are you subscribing to a magazine you no longer read? Chances are you will see things that aren’t necessary—cancel them and spend the money on something you want instead.

  • Plan for Taxes: Remember that taxes apply to your retirement income. Make sure you’re accounting for taxes in your annual budgeting.

  • Seek Professional Advice: If you don’t like discussing money, you’re not alone. But talking to a professional accountant or financial advisor can make it all seem less scary.

Yesterday’s Poll Results - How do you most often spend your Sundays?

😎 It’s clear that Sundays are about rest, relaxation, and reconnection for most RetireHub Daily readers. 58% said they take it easy, while time with family and friends (15%) and chores (also 15%) came close. Many also commented about attending church on Sundays, too. We hope everyone enjoyed their Sunday!

Thanks to everyone who voted and commented!

Our Favorite Comments:

We love hearing and sharing comments from our polls! While we can’t publish them all, we do read and appreciate every comment.

  • “I am retired. Everyday is Sunday.”

  • “Attend church, out to lunch, and relax rest of the day.”

  • “Many families with busy schedules sometimes do not sit and have dinner together on a regular basis during the week. Sunday is a good day to regroup and spend the day with family to interact, eat, talk and reconnect.”

SENIOR LIVING NEWS

Why is it that so many people do not want to look at retirement seriously? It is said that people spend more time planning an overseas trip than they do retirement.

Do we fear retirement? If so, what do we fear?

As you near retirement, itt’s time to switch your focus from saving to withdrawing. But transitioning your investments from a growth to income strategy after retirement can be tricky.

Key Takeaways

•In preparation for retirement, you set up savings and investment accounts that are geared toward a “growth” strategy, which is increasing asset value and capital appreciation.

•In retirement, an “income” investment strategy is better, which means you focus your assets on generating consistent money akin to a retirement paycheck.

•By setting a budget and adjusting your finances, you can give yourself retirement security.

LONGEVITY TIP OF THE DAY

Zest your water—Staying hydrated has all kinds of health benefits, from improving concentration to keeping kidneys functioning well. But not all of us are that tempted by a boring glass of water. So why not add some flavor? Simply add some real fruits like lemon, strawberries, or cucumber to a jug of water and enjoy something refreshing while hitting your hydration goals.

Slang Phrase of the Day

Word: “Sleep on“

Definition: When you “sleep on” something these days, is doesn’t mean to think about something. Now, if you’ve been sleeping on something, you’ve been underestimating or overlooking something or someone.

Used in a Sentence: “Hey, don’t sleep on his planning abilities, he did a great job organizing that golf fundraiser.”

GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY

Even though there is evidence of certain self-medication behaviors in animals, so far it has never been known that animals treat their wounds with healing plants. Now, biologists in Indonesia have observed this in a male Sumatran orangutan.

After sustaining a facial wound, he ate and repeatedly applied sap from a climbing plant with anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties commonly used in traditional medicine. He also covered the entire wound with the green plant mesh.

A team of Japanese researchers found that sports viewing activates brain reward circuits, leading to improved well-being.

This is especially true when watching popular sports like baseball or football, which can notably boost both physical and mental well-being.
