Internet deals (and more) for seniors
It is Tuesday, May 7th, 2024
Dear RetireHub Daily Readers, today is âTech Tuesdayâ.
The times they are aâ changinâ. Here we all are, opening a newsletter each morning with our coffee instead of a newspaper.
Tech lets us stay in touch with loved ones in new ways. Reconnect with old friends through social media. Take care of our banking from home. Many of you have told us about the smart assistants such as Alexa, Siri, and Google you have in your homes.
Tech is a huge part of our livesâbut itâs always changing. Sometimes it feels overwhelming.
Thatâs why every Tuesday weâll have a few tech-themed tips to help you make the most of technology and stay safe online.

Are you confident that you can spot online scams? |
Being aware of online scams
Make sure to keep your time online safe by learning how to spot potential scams. Hereâs a few quick tips:
Beware of texts from unknown numbers: Got a text from an unknown number? If youâre not sure, ignore! Remember that if itâs something genuine and important, it probably wonât be sent over text message.
Check before you click: If you get an email from someone that sounds a bit off, even if you recognize their name, donât click any links in there. Send them a separate email or text asking if they sent the message.
If the siteâs not secure, stay away: Take a look at the web address next time youâre online. They should all start with https, such as https://retirehub.org/. If a site starts with just http (with no âsâ at the end), donât click on anything and leave the site immediately.
Donât ignore updates: We all put off updating our devices. But we shouldnât. Hackers get to know how our devices and software workâupdates keep you one step ahead.
Donât use the same password for everything: This oneâs annoying but important. If you have an obvious password, it will get hacked eventually. If youâre tired of forgetting strong passwords with numbers and characters, hereâs a guide to password managers that can create and store strong passwords for you.

SENIOR LIVING NEWS
When women enter their sixth decade, weâre often divorced or widowed, and loneliness can wedge its way into our daily journey. Then it happens. A friend or family member suggests we go online to âsee whatâs out there.â They love us and their motives are pure. They may want to see us find love again.
We take the bait.
There are five primary ways to safeguard your heart (and pocketbook) in the world of online romance.
When itâs time to retire, the concept of saving for the future changes. âThe futureâ has arrived, after all. Itâs time to enjoy the fruits of your years of labor. This is known as decumulation.
Key Takeaways
â˘Accumulation is the process of setting assets aside in preparation for the future, such as saving for retirement.
â˘When youâre in the decumulation phase of your life, you will be depleting your savings rather than accumulating it.
â˘There is an in-between phase, often towards the end of your career, that is the retirement income planning phase.
LONGEVITY TIP OF THE DAY
Feel the grass under your feetâWalking barefoot has become something of a wellness fad over the years. While walking barefoot everywhere is not recommended (who knows what you might step on!), walking barefoot around your backyard can benefit your balance and posture, helping prevent falls as you age. Some say it even helps you feel more grounded.
Tech Word of the Day
Word: âThe Cloudâ
Definition: Ever wonder where your daily emails are stored? In the cloud! Back in the day, you could only save digital files on the computers themselves or on a storage device. These days, our files and other data are stored on âthe cloudâ: a sort of digital warehouse that keeps them safe.
Used in a Sentence: âI donât need to worry about saving my letter, with Google Docs it saves automatically in the cloud!â
GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY
âI started to slowly open my eyes, and thereâs a kid coming at me, about my height, grey sweats; holds his fist up,â Busbice said, adding that rather than flying into his chin, the fist was holding a dollar bill. âAnd I go, âWhat?'â
ââIf youâre homeless, hereâs a dollar,'â 9-year-old Kelvin Ellis Jr. recalls telling Busbice. ââŚI always wanted to help a homeless person, and I finally had the opportunity.â
As a reward, Busbice took Ellis for a snack at the coffee house, then surprised him with a 40-second shopping spree in the sporting goods store BuckFeather, which he currently runs.
Visitors to a zoo in China captured the moment a clever elephant returned a shoe using its trunk, after it fell into the enclosure.
A video shows the animal stooping to pick up the babyâs footwear and gently lift it back up into the little childâs hand.
