Internet deals (and more) for seniors

It is Wednesday, May 8th, 2024

Dear RetireHub Daily Readers, today’s daily theme is Entertainment.

Wednesday is hump day, whether you’re retired or not. And on hump day we can all use a little relief from everything going on in the world.

Every Wednesday we’ll keep things nice and light, focusing on keeping ourselves entertained by sharing what we’re watching, reading, and any other ways we’re keeping ourselves entertained.

On this day in 1980, the World Health Organization (WHO) officially declared that the smallpox virus had been eliminated from the world. This followed decades of vaccinations and smallpox remains the only human disease ever officially eradicated.

RETIREHUB POLL

How often do you play online games (through your smartphone, tablet, or computer)?

Are online games a good idea?

Online games may get a bad reputation. We often picture a teenager in their bedroom, not talking to anyone because they spend all day online.

But there are actually many online games out there that are made for seniors to keep our wits sharp, keep us learning, or just for fun.

Here are some popular games for seniors to explore:

  • Wordscapes—this popular game combines the best of word searches and crosswords. A great brain challenge!

  •  2048—a numbers-based game that challenges your math skills just enough to be fun while keeping your mind sharp! Can be played on your smart phone, tablet or computer.

  •  PGA Tour Golf Shootout—golf can be a great way to exercise, but for the days the weather isn’t being a good sport, try this golf simulator instead! Includes a “Clubhouse” feature to play against friends.

  • Farmville—a fun farming simulation game that’s cute and rewarding. Grow your farm, trade with neighbors, and even join a co-op!

  • Lumosity—Lumosity is a brain-training platform that has been shown to improve memory, problem-solving, and overall brain function. Sign up for free or subscribe for more games.

A note of caution: While games can be a fun way to stimulate our minds, remember to get up and outside (if you’re able) and to take regular breaks from screens!

Yesterday’s Poll Results - Are you confident that you can spot online scams?

Over 3-quarters (77%) of RetireHub Daily readers feel somewhat confident about spotting online scams. With new, more sophisticated scams popping up all the time, we’ll keep sharing online safety tips every week in our “Tech Tuesday” newsletter.

Thanks to everyone who voted and commented!

Our Favorite Comments:

We love hearing and sharing comments from our polls! While we can’t publish them all, we do read and appreciate every comment.

  • “With the immersion of ai scams are getting a lot more difficult to spot.”

  • “One thing I look for if I’m not sure if it’s for real is miss-spelling of words or numbers in places they shouldn’t be.”

  • “If I receive a Facebook friend request from a man who’s a widow and he’s wearing a uniform or doctors coat then I know it’s a scam. I delete the request.”

SENIOR LIVING NEWS

A lot of research has been done about how music can affect the brain. In the book The Power of Music, Elena Mannes wrote, “Scientists have found that music stimulates more parts of the brain than any other human function.” In other studies, music has been found to reduce pain, to improve memory and to enhance the delicate pathways of the brain itself.

Now, after more than 60 years of focusing on music and singing, the thing that still surprises me most about listening to music is how it can evoke powerful emotion so quickly.

If a loved one has died and named you as the executor of their estate, you may be confused and overwhelmed as to what that means. What does the executor of an estate actually do? Isn’t everything in the will? Shouldn’t the lawyer do all of that?

Key Takeaways

•An executor is someone who carries out the last wishes of the deceased, pays the debts and divides the assets.

•You don’t have to accept the job of executor if you don’t want it.

•Keep meticulous records in case of conflicts.

LONGEVITY TIP OF THE DAY

Take random opportunities to exercise—How often are you doing something that involves a whole lot of standing around doing nothing? Like brushing your teeth? Waiting in line at the bank? Doing the dishes? Take these opportunities (if you’re able) to balance on one leg, or do some marches on the spot. Take care of course, but these little micro exercises compound over time to help develop your leg strength and balance (and don’t worry about the funny looks at the bank).

Slang of the Day

Word: “Quiet quitting”

Definition: Very relevant for hump day, “quiet quitting” is when an employee slowly stops putting in any effort at work. Usually achieved at corporate jobs where the employee finds no purpose in their work, and their manager barely notices them.

Used in a Sentence: “If we actually treated our employees like humans, there might be less quiet quitting going on.”

GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY

White-tailed eagles nesting and breeding in Belgium has been observed for the first time since Florentine explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano became the first European to look upon the island of Manhattan, 500 years ago.

Recently, populations have appeared in eastern France and the Netherlands, and reintroductions have been carried out in Great Britain and Ireland. As one of Europe’s chief eagles, the return of the once widely distributed bird is long overdue.

Visitors to a zoo in China captured the moment a clever elephant returned a shoe using its trunk, after it fell into the enclosure.

A video shows the animal stooping to pick up the baby’s footwear and gently lift it back up into the little child’s hand.
