Internet deals (and more) for seniors
It is Friday, May 10th, 2024
Dear RetireHub Daily Readers, today’s daily theme is Health and Wellness.
If we want to enjoy our retirement to the fullest, we need to live well, not just long. After all, we worked hard to get to this point!
The common wisdom of our parents and grandparents was that retirement was a time to slow down. But we now know that by looking after our nutrition and staying active (if possible), we can have a fun, adventure-filled retirement.
So every Friday we’ll be sharing fun, useful tips to look after our physical, mental, and relationship health in our golden years. Remember to share your tips with us!

Simple exercises for healthy aging
Exercise isn’t for everyone. But, if you can exercise, it’s one of our best tools for making the most of retirement. Even simple exercises done consistently can help keep us healthy and prevent injury from falls.
Here are some simple exercises to try:
Chair yoga—a great way to begin improving your mobility and strength and get the blood flowing. Here’s a great video by seniors, for seniors to get started.
Tai Chi—an ancient martial art that’s about slowing things down to find balance, Tai Chi is a gentle but effective exercise for seniors. Here’s a beginner video featuring seated versions of the exercises.
Water aerobics—water takes the stress off of our joints and lets us move in ways we might not be able to otherwise. Check your local swimming pool for senior classes. Read a guide to get started here.
Pickleball—slightly more active than our other exercises, pickleball is a fun way to have some friendly competition while being less demanding than tennis.
Curling—Curling is a fantastic sport for seniors. It’s a competitive sport that’s relatively easygoing (though sweeping can be a good core workout!). Those with mobility issues can still join in by using a stick to push their rock. Obviously this depends on whether you have a curling club in town…
Walking—walking is an underrated exercise. You can get a decent cardio workout from a good work, as well as a mental health boost. Try swinging your arms up and over your head as you work for some extra benefits.
These exercises should all be accessible (curling may be less popular in some States!), are definitely all fun, and gentle for seniors. If you currently do any of these let us know!
Yesterday’s Poll Results - How much time do you typically spend on your favorite hobby each week?
While 28% of RetireHub Daily readers don’t have a hobby, most (21%) of those who do spend more than 5 hours a week on their passion projects. Perhaps we’ll get a few of those 28% trying something new each Friday!
Thanks to everyone who voted and commented!

The nice thing was now you had the means to enjoy the nicer things in life, but time management became much more of a factor. Balancing a busy career and dating was a challenge.

GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY
Construction of the “largest wildlife crossing in the world” passed a significant milestone in April placing the first girders over an 8-lane freeway near Los Angeles to preserve the local mountain lion population.
After years of tireless work, erecting the first horizontal section of the 210-foot-long crossing was an historic moment for the National Wildlife Federation, the Caltrans highway department, and many private and public partners.
A team of Canadian and US researchers are using X-rays to revive the images that were captured in the 18th century on the earliest form of photography—Daguerreotypes.
Their breakthrough demonstrations have taken artifacts tarnished beyond all recognition and turned out stunningly clear images of the individuals whose portraits were captured all those years ago.
