Travel tips for seniors

Aging can make travel seem that much more stressful. But that shouldnā€™t stop us from adding new experiences to our lives.

Here are some tips to consider when traveling:

  • Bring sleep aidsā€”sleep can be the first thing to suffer during travel. A strange bed, jet lag, strange noises. Packing a sleep mask, ear plugs, and an inflatable neck pillow for the plane means youā€™re more likely to get rest whatever your destination. Manta Sleep has a great range of sleep-saving items.

  • Try slim, light document holdersā€”keep documents safe and within reach using a lightweight pouch. Many come with a range of pockets that let you bring more on the aircraft as a ā€œpersonal itemā€, too. Hereā€™s a list of tried and tested document holders.

  • Share your locationā€”Google maps lets you share your location with others back home who can track in the google maps app. Hereā€™s a guide to turning the feature on.

  • Pack a collapsible water bottleā€”dehydration is a challenge when travelling, especially to warmer climates. A colliapsible water bottle that folds up can be a great solution. Hereā€™s a few to consider.

  • Try a medication reminder appā€”travelling disrupts our routines, and that can be bad when it comes to medication. Try using an app to remind you to take your meds (so long as you have access to wifi or data). Hereā€™s a list of apps you can use.

There are just a few tips to help make travel feel safer and more enjoyable. Please share any of your personal tips with us!

SENIOR LIVING NEWS

I am a mood reader. Sometimes I like a mystery or a thriller. Other times, I crave historical fiction novels. But during the summer, when Iā€™m heading off on vacation or a weekend getaway, I prefer a quick, fun read ā€“ a book that keeps me turning the pages and staying up long past my bedtime. Here are a few Iā€™ve devouredā€¦

Risk planning can be one of the most difficult retirement topics to discuss, but the truth is, many retirees don't plan for the unexpected expenses that can pop up.

Key Takeaways

ā€¢When you retire, your risk of a financial emergency doesnā€™t change even though your income might be limited.

ā€¢Some risks youā€™ll face are family and health emergencies, unexpected inflation, and changes to Medicare or Social Security.

ā€¢The best way to reduce these risks is to have extra money set aside and regularly reassess your budget to account for the funds you have left.

LONGEVITY TIP OF THE DAY

Go Mediterranean, at home!ā€”The Mediterranean diet is linked with a longer, healthier life. But the Mediterranean is also a long distance and an expensive plane ticket away! Bring more olive oil, nuts, oily fish and legumes into your dishes at home with some simple Mediterranean dishes for beginners.

Slang of the Day

Word: ā€œFacepalmā€

Definition: Weā€™ve probably all made the gesture of a ā€œfacepalmā€, slapping our palm to our head when weā€™ve forgotten something or said something silly. Like many common slang words, ā€œfacepalmā€ is a way to express this feeling in text or online.

Used in a Sentence: ā€œI totally forgot to bring my Mediterranean white bean salad. Facepalm.ā€

GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY

A series of solar flares and coronal mass ejections from the sun are creating dazzling auroras across the globe.

The rare solar storm may also disrupt communications. The last time a solar storm of this magnitude reached Earth was in October 2003, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center.

A pair of climate-solution firms have just turned on the largest CO2 vacuum in the world, capable of sucking thousands of tons of carbon out of the atmosphere.

The whole thing will be powered by geothermal energy, making it carbon-negative.
