Warm evenings, barbecues, getting out on the water. Summers can be wonderful. But sometimes the temperature can get too high to be comfortable—and can even make us feel unwell.

As we age, our bodies lose their ability to cope with extreme heat. With this in mind, here are some signs to watch out for that you’re getting too hot while you’re out enjoying the weather—and what you can do about it.

  • Sudden dizziness—this is more likely if you’re being active, such as gardening. Try to get inside or in the shade where it’s cool, put your feet up, and drink some cold water.

  • Heat edema—are your ankles and feet swelling? Take a break somewhere cool and put your feet up. If the symptoms continue, speak to your doctor.

  • Heat exhaustion—if you start feeling weak, uncoordinated, nauseous, and very thirsty, your body is struggling to cool itself. This is one step away from heat stroke, which is a serious medical condition, so pay attention to your body. Get to a cool place, rest, and drink plenty of fluids (ideally with electrolytes, found in sports drinks and oral rehydration tablets).

  • Heatstroke—this is an emergency. Your body can’t control its temperature, which rises to a deadly 104 degrees. Signs are fainting, confusion, not sweating, dry but flushed skin, and either a rapid or slow, weak pulse. Seek medical help immediately. Help someone else by making them cool with cold fluids, a cold shower, or a wet towel.

  • Sun exposure—we’ve probably all been sunburned and it’s very unpleasant. It’s also very preventable. Wear loose, cool clothing such as linen to cover your skin and apply at least SPF 15 sun lotion to any exposed skin (remember the tops of your ears, cap wearers), and limit time in direct sun. You only need 15 minutes a day to get your vitamin D fix.

Now you know the symptoms to look out for, enjoy being outdoors doing your favorite summer activities. And remember the basics: loose, light clothes; drink plenty of fluids (that aren’t caffeinated or alcoholic); and don’t spend too long out in the sun or anywhere you feel too hot.
