Board Games For Seniors

Board games are a great way to keep the mind stimulated while being social—and a great way to get any members of younger generations away from their screens on visits.

Here are a few board games you may not have tried before:

  • Cranium—just the right amount of challenge to get the brain going. The most interesting thing about Cranium is the variety. To win, you have to hum, sketch, act, whistle, sculpt or even spell backwards.

  • Boggle—like a combination of word search and Scrabble. You race against time to find as many 3+ letter words you can. If you get more words, you win!

  • Qwirkle—like scrabble but without the need for a big vocabularly. Qwirkle is based on lining up shapes to match one another, but with a need for strategy that keeps things entertaining.

  • Sequence—an older one, but a good’un. Sequence is poker meets Connect Four: create a sequence of chips from the cards on the board, using special cards to add extra chips or remove another player’s!

  • Risk—a board game based on military strategy. The point is to invade other players’ territories until someone has taken over the whole board. Alliances can be made and broken, keeping everyone on their toes.

Just remember it’s all fun and games!

Our Favorite Comments:

We love hearing and sharing all your comments from our polls! While we can’t publish them all, we do read and appreciate every comment.

  • “We have a subscription to Bon Apetite and we love to find new recipes to try out.”

  • “I am not a creative cook, don't really enjoy it and don't want to spend time and money on ingredients I probably won't use again. Therefore I stick with simple meals. Chicken, crock pot, meatloaf, spaghetti, etc. OR, my husband makes something. ”

  • “I love to cook! The oven, stove top, slow cooker or the grill....let me at 'em! Watching my family enjoy a good meal gives me great pleasure!”

  • “After 55 years of cooking for a family I am finally on my own and can cook when I want or by ready made and eat when I want. I love it.”

  • “If I don't eat a microwaved frozen dinner, I make a large pot of something like chili, tuna/noodle casserole, chicken & rice or noodles, spaghetti casserole, etc. and eat it for a week or so.”

SENIOR LIVING NEWS

Pets sustain us and keep us healthier, happier and more hopeful as we age – no bones about it.

But new challenges to pet ownership emerge as we age, including medical diagnoses that can keep us away from our furry, feathered friends or make it impossible to care for them, as well as unforeseen financial issues and living arrangements that reframe our capacity to keep them. These are tough scenarios to imagine, but it is a reality we should all expect and plan for during our second half.

Delve into the following insights to understand the key elements that come into play when aiming for a retirement at 60.

Key Takeaways

•Retiring at 60 is not very common—only 13% of workers say they plan to retire by then—but it isn’t impossible.

•To retire at age 60, you need to evaluate your current financial situation and determine if you have enough saved.

•Retiring at 60 means you will need to wait two more years before you can start collecting Social Security benefits; these benefits can be a big boost to your income.

Overcome your fear of asking for help—for many in our generation, we were taught to just get on and deal with whatever life throws at us. But we achieve nothing with silent suffering. There is no shame in asking for help. It can literally save your life as you get older and life gets more challenging. If you struggle to ask for help, consider speaking to a professional about why you find that challenging.

Phrase: “OK, Boomer“

Meaning: One that we may not like to hear … “OK, Boomer” is said sarcastically or dismissively by a member of a younger generation (Millennials or Gen Z) to a member of the Boomer generation who says something outdated.

In a sentence: “I told her that all she had to do was work hard and save to be able to buy a house and do you know what she said? ‘OK, Boomer’!“

GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY

A Waukegan therapy dog and best friend to a 79-year-old woman with dementia has returned home after allegedly being stolen late last week, family members said.

The plight of Bella over the last week was like something out of a movie, daughter Prinses Hemhpill said.

During a recent research near Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts, officials with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported 161 sightings of seven whale species.

Not only is this a pretty large group of whales, but the sightings included some unusual cetaceans for New England waters.
