Tips for reconnecting with old friends

Sometimes life takes us in strange directions. No matter how close we are with someone, we may end up in different parts of the country or even with an ocean between us.

As we get older we may start to wonder about the people that meant so much to us. And in the connected world we live in, this is easier to do than ever.

Here’s a few things to consider when reaching out to an old friend:

  • Social media is the easiest way—if you’ve lost touch with someone, there’s a good chance they may have changed address or phone number. That means social media like facebook is the best place to find them. Reach out and send them a direct message to keep things private. Here’s a guide for sending messages on Facebook.

  • People are almost always happy to hear from an old friend—if you think about them, chances are they think about you, too. They’ll probably appreciate a chance to catch up. Keep this in mind if you’re feeling nervous.

  • If you’re nervous, write down some things to talk about—think up old shared memories and questions to ask them. It’s normal to be nervous after such a long time.

  • Don’t be put off if the first time you call/meet up is awkward—it might take a while to feel comfortable again. A lot has happened in your lives since you last spoke. You can try going to show or a club together to help break the ice and give you things to talk about.

It is all too easy to become lonely in retirement. Reaching out to an old friend can be a rewarding way to bring connections back into your life. We wish you all the best in catching up with an old pal.
