Gardening Safety Tips For Seniors

Gardening might seem like a harmless hobby but there are risks as we get older. Here are some safety tips to enjoy this rewarding retirement hobby.

  • Stay level—falling becomes both more likely and more of a problem as we age. Keep your garden level and free of trip hazards.

  • Avoid the midday sun—spending time outdoors is a reward in itself, but beware of heat stroke and dehydration by gardening either early in the morning or later in the evening. Stay hydrated with cool drinks and take regular breaks.

  • Try raised beds—the trouble with gardening is it can require a lot of bending over. That’s not great for aging backs. Try raised beds so you don’t have to bend over constantly.

  • Wear gloves—you may like getting your hands dirty but our immune systems aren’t the same as we age. Cuts and scrapes can become infected, so keep those hands protected.

  • Try indoor gardening—if you have mobility issues or no access to outdoor space, explore an indoor garden that lets you enjoy this rewarding hobby with less manual labor.

Share your gardening tips with us and we’ll include our favorites next Saturday!

SENIOR LIVING NEWS

Sustainable gardening is an approach that allows you to cultivate your garden by working in harmony with nature.

Whether you’re an experienced green thumb or just starting to explore the wonders of your own backyard oasis, sustainable gardening is both a practical and fulfilling pursuit.

Here are some of the reasons the Social Security Administration may have reduced your Social Security check.

Key Takeaways

•Taking early retirement will permanently reduce the amount of your Social Security checks.

•Your Social Security check may be subject to an offset to cover unpaid back taxes, student loans, or other liabilities.

•If your tax bracket goes up, you’ll have to pay more for Medicare, and that comes out of your Social Security check.

Hobby: Geocaching

Think: Hiking with a GPS treasure hunt

What’s the point: A fun way to get out and explore, you can use the Geocaching app to track down Geocaches where you live. Other Geocache users hide logbooks inside carefully hidden containers. The point is to track them down using the app and leave a note in the logbook.

GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY

When a dying veteran’s last wish was to receive a high school diploma, a superintendent teamed up with an American Legion Outpost commander to make it happen.

Thanks to their tireless effort on behalf of a man who had given his all and more for the country’s armed forces, his final moments would be those of pride and joy as he was handed the honorary education he never received.

60 years after passing Air Force selection as a candidate to be the first African-American astronaut, Edward Dwight fulfilled that dream by blasting off with Blue Origin on Sunday for a short trip into space.

“Fantastic! A life-changing experience. Everyone needs to do this!” Edward Dwight told NPR. “I didn’t know I needed this in my life, but now I need it in my life.”
