Dating in Retirement: Things to Consider

Nobody paints a picture of retirement as a single person. But this is the reality for many. Whether we get widowed or decide to separate in retirement, itā€™s helpful to know how to ā€œput yourself out thereā€ again.

  • Dating will be differentā€”if the last time you dated was decades ago, expect the courtship to be a little different. Youā€™ve both lived full lives, may have familes and grandkids. It wonā€™t be the same as when you were young. But embrace the difference.

  • You donā€™t have to go straight to the internetā€”getting out into the world is important. You could meet a lovely single person at group events. Agree to social invitations and join clubs to make meeting an available someone more likely.

  • But online dating can be a great optionā€”dating apps or websites such as plentyoffish.com let you browse different singles and message them before meeting. This can feel safer for many people.

  • Be cautiousā€”unfortunately, seniors can be targets for romance scams. Donā€™t share any information that can identify you (address, social security, banking info). If you meet up with someone, meet in a public place and tell a friend or family member where youā€™ll be.

  • Donā€™t rushā€”being single is not the end of the world. Perhaps youā€™ll find you enjoy your own company and find companionship in friends and social activities. Donā€™t rush into a relationship just because you think you have to. Wait for the right personā€”or enjoy being single.

If you have any tips or stories about dating, reply to this emailā€”weā€™ll share them next Sunday!

SENIOR LIVING NEWS

Where do our inner and outer challenges with age and more specifically, the idea of what constitutes physical beauty after 60, come from?

For years, millions of women have based their sense of self-worth on how others physically perceive them. Of course, there is nothing wrong with taking time to look and feel your best. The mounting stress of not feeling beautiful enough, however, takes an emotional toll on your well-being.

Retirement communities, targeted at those 55 and older, attract seniors with the promise of state-of-the-art gyms, golf courses, dining options, and moreā€”but not all of these developments are created equal.

Key Takeaways

ā€¢Retirement communities are for independent people age 55+, and offer special services and amenities for monthly fees

ā€¢Some communities, often Continuing Care Retirement Communities, also offer increasing levels of healthcare to accommodate your needs as you get older

ā€¢Itā€™s important to weigh the cost of living in a retirement community, with HOA dues and other fees, against those entailed by other living arrangements, which could be less expensive

GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY

In South Korea, chemists have recently developed a way to grow artificial micro-diamonds in minutes, rather than days.

Evidence is growing that CBD, a non-psychoactive ingredient of cannabis, is potentially effective in treating various pet maladies, says Chie Mogi, lead veterinarian of the Animal CBD Research Society in Japan, who has reported such cases in veterinary publications.

Though the evidence for effectiveness is still mixed, and pet owners and researchers must contend with inconsistent ingredients, many scientists have hope that CBD can expand the therapeutic options for furry patients.
