Protein: Why you probably arenā€™t getting enough (but you should)

A lot of us lose our appetites as we age. While moderation is a good thing, we can miss out on a vital part of the diet: Protein. Protein helps us maintain muscle, which keeps us strong and active, and helps prevent falls.

But how much protein should you be eating? And how can you get more in your diet?

  • How much protein? Guidelines say that those over 65 should aim for 1 - 1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight every day. Those under 65 can aim for 0.8 grams per kilo. But so long as you include protein with 3 decent-sized meals each day you should be doing well.

Nutritional ways to eat more protein:

  • Eggs: Eggs used to have a bad reputation for being too fatty, but theyā€™re an excellent source of protein.

  • Chicken: Chicken is an excellent source of protein without the negative health impacts of red meat. And itā€™s versatile!

  • Fish: Salmon and mackerel are packed with protein and include plenty of nutritious Omega-3 to boot. Both are also low in mercury, unlike other types of fish.

  • Powerhouse veggies: If you donā€™t eat meat there are plenty of high-protein options. Beans, chickpeas, lentils, and nuts are all packed with protein.

  • Protein shakes: Shakes are an easy option for boosting your protein intake. Simply mix with water, your favorite kind of milk, or blend into smoothies.

  • ā€œRecently went to Italy and purchased a Travelon bag with locks that prevent pic pockets. I felt safer with this small gesture. ā€

  • ā€œI just returned from Europe-just applied common sense tactics, no dark alleys, well lit crowded streets etc.. We did not have any issues.ā€

  • ā€œNot an average traveler, as I was a flight attendant for 47 years. But the U.S. is the only country where I felt unsafe.ā€

  • ā€œI don't travel abroad because there is enough to see in the USA!ā€

SENIOR LIVING NEWS

Losing a spouse is a challenging and transformative experience. Your partnerā€™s death can reshape your life. I get it. It happened to me when my late husband, Tom, passed 17 years ago. His death was the most devastating event I ever faced.

I want to share three important secrets of resilient widows to assist other women to not only survive after their spouseā€™s deathā€¦ but also to thrive after grief.

Putting a house in a trust is an option that can help protect your assets and reduce the tax burden on your loved ones. But after being put in a trust, homes may become inaccessible to their owners.

Key Takeaways

ā€¢Putting real estate in a trust is a move designed to ensure your home passes safely to beneficiaries.

ā€¢An irrevocable trust makes it tough to sell or refinance your home in the years before it transfers to your heirs.

ā€¢A revocable trust can protect your home from probate, but it doesnā€™t offer the protections you get with one thatā€™s irrevocable.

GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY

A young man has won a five-figure financial prize at the nationā€™s top science fair for his research into a mysterious outbreak of tumors he witnessed among the sea turtles under the waves of his home in Hawaii.

Whether young or old, the whole population seemed to be infected and slowly dying, prompting Springer to start what would become a 2.5-year research program.

At first, officers thought the 911 call from a young man saddened by his lack of birthday plans was a joke.

After realizing it was genuine, they left to perform a wellness checkā€”and brought along a birthday cake to cheer him up, capturing his reaction.
