A guide to finding the right cologne

We recently had a reader request for a guide to cologne and we thoughtā€”fantastic idea! If you ever want us to explore a topic, all you have to do is reply to this email.

Dressing with confidence can help us feel more confident. Feeling confident is a strong sign that our mental health is in a good place.

Smell is very personal, though. So itā€™s important to explore different scents that work for youā€”and any intimate loved ones you may have.

Things to consider when shopping for a cologne:

  • How strong do you want the scent to be? The strength of a cologne can be the difference between a subtle whiff and a smell that fills the room (this is known as the ā€œsillage rangeā€). Many people opt for strong scents and douse themselves in itā€”but often others can find this overpowering and off putting. Thereā€™s a guide to the strength in the naming:

    • Eau Fraiche is very subtle and may need reapplications through the day

    • Eau de Cologne is slightly stronger

    • Eau de Toilette is stronger still

    • Eau de Parfum is usually the strongest

  • Consider different fragrances: colognes can be called all kinds of nonsense things. Look beyond the marketing to what it actually smells like. To help understand different smells and what you might want to explore, hereā€™s a handy fragrance wheel you can explore. Note that perfumes and colognes are made of 3 different of scents:

    • Top notes (that strike first)

    • The heart (the main scent that will stay with people)

    • Base notes (these give the scent its depth and complexity)

  • Try different scents: perhaps an expensive game to play, but the only way to really know if a scent works for you is to try it in the real world. You may want to get to the point where you have a recogizable ā€œsignature scentā€, but you want to make sure itā€™s the right one before you get there. Ask a loved one if it works for themā€”theyā€™ll be smelling it almost as often as you! If you donā€™t have a significant other, try asking a trusted friend for honest feedback.

  • Ask people what they wear: exploring scents can be a lot of work, so if you get lucky and smell a scent on someone else that you think would work on you, ask them what it is! It might feel weird at first but folks are generally happy to take a compliment and explain what theyā€™re wearing.

We hope this guide helps you on your journey to find the right scent for you! To get you thinking, hereā€™s a list of popular colognes for older gentlemen.
