Safe Travel Trips For Seniors

Traveling is a wonderful way to explore the world and expand the soulā€”but itā€™s not without its dangers. Youā€™re in an unfamiliar place, there is extra stress on your body, and tourists can be a popular target for thieves.

But we donā€™t want those things to put you off. Here are a few tips to make traveling a safe and enjoyable experience.

  • Keep copies of important documents: Losing a passport is a headache but it happens. Having copies of your documents makes things a lot easier.

  • Bring a notebook with important numbers: A lost phone can make you feel stranded nowadays. Have a notebook with loved ones and emergency contacts in, such as the U.S. Embassy and your host/hotel.

  • Donā€™t carry lots of cash: a small amount may be useful, but almost everywhere accepts cards these days. The international charge from your bank may be better than losing a wad of cash.

  • Consider travel insurance: sure, itā€™s an extra expense, but itā€™s a lot less than paying for an emergency out of your own pocket. Hereā€™s a guide to the best travel insurance policies.

  • Be careful about public wifi: If your cell phone has a good data plan for international travel, use it. If not, stick to trusted wifi services that require a password. Wifi without passwords is not secure.

  • Learn basic phrases: These can help in an emergency. If you have more time, you can try using Google Translate but you may endear yourself to the locals if you try some basic phrases. Hereā€™s a guide for Google Translate.

We hope these tips help you feel safer and more confident when traveling. Have tips of your own? Reply to this email and weā€™ll share the best ones!

  • ā€œPodcasts are really, really great to listen to when youā€™re walking alone. I especially liked ā€œSerialā€.ā€

  • ā€œListening to a podcast allows me to multitask while Iā€™m listening. I enjoy working in my garage / shop while listening to a podcast or an audiobook.ā€

  • ā€œJust talk like the radio.ā€

SENIOR LIVING NEWS

Without a daily work routine, you now have little structure to your day. No one is pushing you, no deadlines. You may not even set an alarm to wake up each morning. All of this is a recipe for motivation drain, for inertia.

To fight back against this tide, we need to find and strengthen our motivation ā€“ motivation to be more active, eat healthier and connect more with others. And that is just a start.

Travel Tip of the Day: Reducing Turbulence

Sit near the wingā€”if you arenā€™t a fan of turbulence (and who is?), you will feel less of it if you sit near the wing. This is because the aeroplane is more stable in the middle. Youā€™ll feel turbulence the most towards the back of the plane.

GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY

It might sound like a stream of jolly nonsense, but the peculiar sounds babies produce could be an attempt to practise the vocal control necessary for speech, researchers have suggested.

A study analyzing the sounds made by infants during their first year of life has found squeals and growls tend to occur in groups.

A class of high schoolers managed to solve the 35-year-old cold case of the Redhead Murders in Tennessee and surrounding states.

It started at Elizabethton High School in Tennessee, where teacher Alex Campbell was looking to engage and inspire the students through an unorthodox sociology assignment.
