Solo Travel After 50: Tips and Destinations
Traveling solo after 50 can be one of life’s most rewarding adventures. With fewer family obligations and more flexibility in your schedule, this stage of life offers a unique opportunity to explore the world entirely on your own terms. Whether you’re newly retired, semi-retired, or simply craving a change of scenery, solo travel can bring a renewed sense of independence and confidence.
One of the biggest advantages of traveling alone is freedom. You set the pace. Want to linger in a museum for hours? Sleep in? Skip a crowded attraction? There’s no need to compromise. Solo travel also encourages connection — many travelers find they’re more likely to strike up conversations with locals or fellow adventurers when they’re on their own.
Planning is key to a smooth experience. Start with destinations known for safety, walkability, and strong tourism infrastructure. Research neighborhoods, transportation options, and accommodations carefully. Consider booking small-group tours or day excursions to combine independence with social interaction. Travel insurance is especially important, providing peace of mind in case of unexpected changes or health concerns.
Packing light is another helpful strategy. Choose versatile clothing, comfortable walking shoes, and keep important documents organized and easily accessible. Sharing your itinerary with a trusted friend or family member adds an extra layer of security.
As for destinations, many solo travelers over 50 gravitate toward places rich in culture and easy to navigate. European cities like Florence, Edinburgh, and Lisbon offer history, excellent public transportation, and vibrant café culture. In the United States, cities such as Charleston, Santa Fe, and Seattle combine charm, scenery, and welcoming communities. For those seeking nature, national parks or guided walking tours can provide structure while still allowing independence.
Perhaps the greatest reward of solo travel at this stage of life is personal growth. Stepping outside your comfort zone — even in small ways — can reignite curiosity and self-trust. You may discover new interests, hidden strengths, or simply the joy of savoring a sunset without distraction.
Traveling alone doesn’t mean being lonely. It means giving yourself permission to explore the world — and yourself — with fresh eyes and an open heart.

Yesterday’s Poll Results: Which classic comedy duo still makes you laugh the most?

It’s no surprise that Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz stole the spotlight with over 41% of the vote — their sharp timing and unforgettable on-screen chemistry clearly still resonate. The Smothers Brothers earned a strong showing as well, followed by steady love for Abbott and Costello, Laurel and Hardy, and Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. The results show that while one duo may lead the pack, classic comedy in all its forms continues to bring laughter across generations — proof that great humor never goes out of style.
TOP COMMENTS
“I love comedy, so all of the above. We (my wife and I) entertain people when we are out and about, in stores and at appointments. We do the over-exaggerated married couple; we get some laughs (after they figure out we're kidding).”
“I love reruns of Roseanne! Dan & Roseanne Connor!”
“Rowan and Martin. I still laugh where I rewatch them and Laugh-In.”
“Carol Burnett and Harvey Korman with a side of Tom Conway. Love improvisation.”
“Cheech and Chong”
How Much Cash Is Too Much in Retirement?
Holding cash in retirement can provide comfort and stability, especially during market swings. Many experts suggest keeping one to three years of living expenses in easily accessible accounts so you’re not forced to sell investments during a downturn.
However, keeping too much in low-yield cash can quietly reduce your purchasing power over time due to inflation. The key is balance: maintain enough for security and short-term needs, while ensuring the rest of your portfolio is positioned to support long-term growth and income.

Airport Rescue Pup “JetBlue” Finds Forever Home With Officer Who Helped Save Him
A tiny goldendoodle nicknamed JetBlue was abandoned earlier this month at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, left tied to a baggage sizer near a JetBlue ticket counter when his owner attempted to fly without proper documentation for the dog. Officers from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department responded, the owner was charged with animal abandonment, and JetBlue was taken into care by Animal Protective Services and a local rescue organization when he wasn’t reclaimed. After a nationwide outpouring of interest in adopting him, one of the responding officers — Officer Skeeter Black — and his family, who had already been approved to adopt a similar breed, officially welcomed JetBlue into their home as his loving forever family.
