SPICE UP YOUR SPACE: START YOUR OWN INDOOR HERB GARDEN
Ever thought about having fresh herbs at your fingertips? Starting an indoor herb garden is easier than you might think, and it's a delightful way to bring a bit of nature indoors!
Here's how to get started:
Choose Your Herbs
Basil: Great for pasta and salads.
Mint: Perfect for teas and desserts.
Parsley: A versatile garnish for many dishes.
Chives: Adds a mild onion flavor to your meals.
Find a Sunny Spot
Most herbs love sunlight. A windowsill that gets 6-8 hours of sun is ideal.
No sunny window? Consider using a small LED grow light.
Pick the Right Pots
Use containers with drainage holes to prevent waterlogged roots.
Get creative—teacups or mason jars can work if you add some pebbles at the bottom for drainage.
Use Quality Potting Mix
A good potting mix provides nutrients and helps with drainage.
Avoid using garden soil; it can be too heavy and may contain pests.
Water Wisely
Keep the soil moist but not soggy.
Stick your finger an inch into the soil—if it feels dry, it's time to water.
Enjoy and Harvest
Snip what you need, starting with the outer leaves.
Regular trimming encourages new growth and keeps your plants healthy.
Tips to Keep in Mind:
Label Your Plants: It’s easy to forget which is which, especially when they’re just sprouting.
Rotate Your Plants: Turn them every few days so all sides get sunlight.
Watch for Pests: Indoor herbs can still attract bugs. If you see any, gently rinse the leaves or use an insecticidal soap safe for edibles.
Starting an indoor herb garden is a rewarding hobby that brings fresh flavors to your kitchen and a touch of greenery to your home. Plus, there’s something special about saying, “I grew this myself!”
Happy herb growing!
Yesterday’s Poll Results - How do you feel about aromatherapy?
Most RH members either use essential oils occasionally or swear by it (53% of the combined vote), with many of those that don’t like aromatherapy stating there were health concerns around it in the comments.
Thanks to the many of you who vote and comment every day.
Our Favorite Comments:
“I love essential oils, candles, incense anything that makes my surrounding feel and smell nice!”
“I have a slight breathing issue, because of this I can not have anything burning, smoking or added to the air in my home.”
“Unfortunately my husband has allergies and cannot tolerate scents nor can I wear perfumes. One day I tried on a perfume I hadn't worn in ages. Just a dab on my wrists. I was upstairs and he was downstairs and he immediately yelled up... "what's that smell?" Ugh”
“My husband has horrible allergies, so from the "get go" we have been fragrance free, not always easy. We have been married 44 years and after all this time, I have gotten to the point where I cannot stand many scents and/or odors, be it perfumes, aftershave, body wash, cigarette smoke, etc. When we go anywhere, even our kids' homes, he goes with allergy medicine in hand. ”
While we can’t publish them all, we do read and appreciate every comment. Some comments are edited to make room for more contributions.
