On this day in 1962, Wilt Chamberlain scored an astonishing 100 points in a single NBA game, setting a record that still stands today. Playing for the Philadelphia Warriors against the New York Knicks in Hershey, Pennsylvania, Wilt Chamberlain delivered one of the most legendary performances in sports history.
More than six decades later, no NBA player has surpassed the 100-point mark in a single game — making it one of basketball’s most enduring records.

Staying Financially Independent While Offering Help to Family
Many older adults take pride in being the steady hand their families can rely on. Whether it’s helping with a grandchild’s tuition, assisting an adult child during a job transition, or contributing to a family emergency, generosity often feels natural. But supporting loved ones should never come at the expense of your own financial security.
Financial independence means maintaining control over your resources so you can meet your needs today and in the years ahead. Retirement savings, healthcare costs, housing, and daily living expenses must remain the priority. Before offering help, take a clear look at your budget, income sources, and long-term plans. If a gift or loan would create stress or uncertainty for you, it may be too much.
One helpful approach is to set boundaries in advance. Decide what you feel comfortable giving — whether that’s a specific dollar amount per year, occasional non-financial help like childcare, or assistance only in true emergencies. Having these limits in place makes it easier to respond thoughtfully rather than emotionally when a request arises.
It’s also wise to distinguish between gifts and loans. If you choose to lend money, put the terms in writing. While it may feel formal within a family, clarity protects relationships. Everyone understands expectations, and misunderstandings are less likely to cause resentment later.
Communication matters just as much as the financial decision itself. You can express love and support while still saying no. For example: “I want to help, but I need to be sure my retirement remains secure.” Most family members, when they understand your reasoning, will respect your position.
Remember, your independence is not selfish — it’s responsible. Maintaining your financial stability ensures you won’t become dependent on others later. It also models healthy money management for younger generations, showing that generosity works best when it’s balanced with planning.
Offering help can be meaningful and rewarding. The key is to give from a place of strength, not sacrifice. When your own foundation is solid, your support becomes a gift freely given — and sustainably offered.

Yesterday’s Poll Results: Would You Enjoy Monthly Group Birthday Celebrations?

Interest in monthly group birthday celebrations leans positive, with 30% saying they love the idea and an even larger 40% open to it depending on the group. That openness suggests the concept has real potential, especially when the atmosphere feels comfortable and the mix of people feels right. At the same time, 25% prefer celebrating one-on-one, a gentle reminder that birthdays are personal and not everyone gravitates toward larger gatherings. A small portion shared that they don’t usually celebrate birthdays at all (6%), and just 1% said they’d be willing to help organize — proof that while many enjoy attending, fewer are eager to handle the logistics. Overall, the responses point to thoughtful interest, with flexibility and inclusivity likely being the key ingredients for making group celebrations truly enjoyable.
TOP COMMENTS

“I prefer to go out with my wife, possibly a couple of friends, to a nice restaurant, if I decide to celebrate it.”
“I participate in an aquatic exercise group. We get together at a different restaurant once a month for lunch to celebrate those who have a birthday in that month. No gifts, no cake or gifts. It's all about socializing and getting to know one another on a more personal level.”
“Before I retired, we had individual birthday parties for various people. We would all pitch in with cake, lunches, decorations. It was nice.”
“Live in a 55 plus community. The first Wednesday of every month we celebrate residents who have birthdays that month. A group photo is taken for the residents newsletter. Celebrate with cake, ice cream and lemonade. All are invited.”
What Causes Varicose Veins as We Age — and How to Ease Them
Varicose veins develop when tiny valves inside the veins weaken, allowing blood to pool instead of flowing smoothly back to the heart. As we age, vein walls and valves naturally lose elasticity, increasing pressure in the legs and causing veins to enlarge, twist, and become more visible. Prolonged sitting or standing, excess weight, and reduced circulation can all contribute to the problem.
While often seen as cosmetic, varicose veins can also cause aching, heaviness, and swelling. Simple steps like staying active, elevating your legs, wearing compression stockings, and avoiding long periods of inactivity can help improve circulation and reduce discomfort.
