Dear Joanne

Your questions, her wisdom — Joanne’s here with thoughtful advice, warm humor, and a listening ear for whatever’s on your mind.

One of my New Year’s resolutions was to learn something new about myself on a regular basis and improve based on my findings. It is not as easy as you may think given how I am perfectly set in my ways! So, I thought I would give you an insight as to what my January observations were.

This month, I learned that patience is not something you have, it is something you are forced to practice against your will, usually while standing, waiting, or listening to recorded elevator music which tends to put me to sleep. I have learned that the older I get the less patience I have. Or maybe the less patience I choose to have. I have less years left to live than the number of years I have already experienced. Why do I need patience anyway!

I learned exactly how much patience I have while waiting on hold with customer service with my cell phone vendor – the time I waited on hold was long enough to question my life choices. The recording kept thanking me for my “continued patience”. They thanked me so many times that I began to think they were mocking me for actually staying on the line. By the time a human answered, I could not remember why I had called, but I stayed on the line just to make a point.

I learned patience at the doctor’s office, where I arrived 15 minutes early (which they require), filled out the same forms I filled out last time (my birthday never changes, why do they keep asking me), and then sat in the waiting room long enough to watch their television screens show the same “how to improve your health” stories at least three times – I could almost recite them word for word. Once I was called in, the appointment itself lasted about six minutes, but the waiting taught me a great deal about patience.

I learned patience while dealing with technology, specifically the device that updated itself without permission and then acted like I was the problem. (Oh wait, I just remembered why I was on with Customer Service that day which I referenced above.) Why do the updates reset all my preferences? I hate that! Very frustrating…

On my favorite ap, I was informed that my password was incorrect. I found that quite interesting since I have used the same password since the Clinton administration. Apparently, my password is now “too weak,” which is exactly how I felt about myself after the third attempt in creating a password that met all of the qualifications.

I learned patience at the grocery store self-checkout, where I was scolded by the self-checkout machine for placing my groceries in the bagging area exactly where it told me to place them. A teenager had to come over and “fix” it, which involved doing the exact same thing I had just done.

I learned patience with my body. I have learned that trying to get up off the floor is a commitment, not a casual action, and that once I’m down there, I might as well check for anything I dropped earlier in the week but never bothered to pick up.

I learned patience with other people, especially those who say, “It’ll just take a second.” This is never true. A “second” is now a unit of time meaning indefinite. I waited long enough to reconsider my hair style, my footwear, and my expectations of humanity in general.

Most of all, I learned patience with myself. I don’t move as fast as I used to, I don’t tolerate nonsense as well as I once did, and I realized just this week that my skin no longer has that healthy glow it once had in my twenties. Time to shop for new makeup and moisturizer.

So yes, I learned a lot about myself this month, mostly about patience. And while I still don’t like waiting, I have become very good at it. I bring snacks. I walk in place to get my steps in – my Fitbit thinks I am actually walking! And I remind myself that if patience truly is a virtue, then by now I must be nominated for sainthood.

What have you learned about yourself recently? Did something sneak up on you? Email me at [email protected] and tell me your stories. I love to hear from you.

Have a great week and keep warm!

Joanne

On this day in 1986, the Space Shuttle Challenger tragically broke apart just 73 seconds after liftoff, leading to the loss of all seven crew members. The event profoundly changed NASA’s safety procedures and is remembered each year as a moment of reflection on the risks of space exploration and the courage of those who pursue it.

Streaming Services Compared: Which Ones Are Worth It?

Streaming services have transformed how we watch television and movies, offering endless entertainment without commercials or schedules. But with so many options available, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed—or end up paying for more services than you actually use. Understanding the strengths of each platform can help you decide which ones are truly worth your time and money.

Netflix remains one of the most popular choices, known for its wide variety of original series, movies, and documentaries. It’s especially appealing if you enjoy binge-watching shows or discovering new international content. However, its monthly cost has risen over the years, so it’s best for people who watch frequently.

Amazon Prime Video is often a great value because it’s included with an Amazon Prime membership. In addition to movies and TV shows, Prime offers classics, rentals, and original programming. If you already use Amazon for shopping, this service can feel like a bonus rather than an extra expense.

Hulu stands out for its access to current television shows, often available the day after they air. This makes it ideal for viewers who want to stay up-to-date with network programs without traditional cable. Hulu also offers different plans, including options with limited commercials.

Disney+ appeals to families, nostalgia lovers, and fans of classic films. It features Disney favorites, nature programming, and well-known franchises, all in a clean, easy-to-navigate format. It’s a good pick if you enjoy familiar, feel-good entertainment.

For those who enjoy news, live sports, or specialty channels, services like YouTube TV or Sling TV offer cable-style experiences without long contracts. These can be more expensive but may replace cable altogether for some households.

The key to getting the most value from streaming is flexibility. Many services allow month-to-month subscriptions, so you can rotate platforms depending on what you want to watch. Taking a few minutes to review your subscriptions once or twice a year can help keep costs under control while still enjoying great entertainment.

Yesterday’s Poll Results: How do you feel about using home security cameras?

These results show a generally positive attitude toward home security cameras, with the largest group saying they already use them and feel more secure. A significant portion of respondents also prefer limiting cameras to outdoor areas, suggesting that privacy inside the home remains an important concern. While interest is there, smaller groups expressed hesitation—either due to privacy worries, uncertainty about where to start, or a preference for traditional locks and alarms. Overall, the poll suggests that security cameras are widely accepted, but many people want solutions that balance safety, simplicity, and personal privacy.

TOP COMMENTS

  • “With two homes and away for extended times, it is necessary to monitor traffic in the front and rear of both homes in addition to the insides. Also helps with deliveries. But are careful not to record neighbors’ activities.”

  • “Mine caught a thief stealing a UPS package. I downloaded the video to a thumb drive and took it to the sheriff’s department. He was known to them and arrested him. He had also stolen a pickup just down the road the same day. I have about 16 watching my house and other buildings. I love being able to see everything when we are away from home. I suggest PTZ cameras with a lot of zoom.”

  • “I’m planning on getting a few outdoor cameras but don’t know what brand would be best for me…”

  • “I purchased cameras only to find out we were on 5G and they weren't compatible. The other problem has been with the requirement for subscription(s), we can't afford that. We would like to find an affordable solution but not holding my breath.”

  • “I live in a secured building. It has lots of cameras, so I don’t have to worry about it.”

Everyday Habits That Help Keep Your Liver Healthy

Your liver does a lot of behind-the-scenes work every day, from processing nutrients to filtering toxins and supporting digestion. Taking care of it doesn’t require extreme diets or complicated routines—just consistent, healthy habits. Eating more whole foods like fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats can ease the liver’s workload, while cutting back on sugary and heavily processed foods helps reduce strain. Moderating alcohol intake is also important, as even regular moderate drinking can tax liver function over time. Maintaining a healthy weight through gentle movement and mindful eating further supports liver health and lowers the risk of fatty liver disease.

It’s also wise to be mindful of medications, supplements, and everyday stress. Many common pain relievers and herbal products are processed by the liver, so using only what you truly need can make a difference. Sleep and stress management matter, too—poor rest and ongoing stress can increase inflammation and affect how well the liver functions. Prioritizing good sleep, relaxation, and simple daily movement helps keep the liver working smoothly. Small, steady choices really do add up, and caring for your liver is an investment in better energy, balance, and overall well-being.

Slang Phrase of the Day

Phrase: Chronically online

Meaning: A slang term describing someone who spends so much time on the internet—especially on social media—that it starts to shape how they think, talk, or react to everyday life, sometimes at the expense of real-world experiences.

In a sentence: “My grandson says he’s trying not to be so chronically online, so he’s putting his phone down in the evenings and joining us for walks and card games instead.”

Good News of the Day

Man Gives His Inherited Field to His Hometown—But Only If It Becomes a Community Orchard

When Michel Éprinchard inherited a large overgrown field in his childhood town in western France, he didn’t see a valuable asset—just weeds and memories. But instead of selling it or letting it sit unused, he had an idea to give back. He offered to donate the land to the nearby municipality of Clussais-la-Pommeraie on one condition: they must turn it into a fruit orchard and community garden that everyone in town could enjoy.

The local mayor embraced the idea, and community volunteers jumped in to plant the first 50 trees, including apple, pear, and plum varieties. More plantings—including flower beds and hedges—are planned, with the first harvest expected in a few years. The orchard won’t just provide fresh fruit; it’s already serving its purpose today by bringing neighbors together and transforming an unused field into a shared gathering space.

Éprinchard’s vision reflects a growing movement of community orchards, where shared fruit trees become more than food producers—they become places where people connect, learn, and care for the land together. These orchards emphasize communal stewardship and shared resources, fostering social ties while boosting access to fresh produce.

What started as a neglected piece of land is now becoming a living legacy of community spirit, cooperation, and hope for future harvests.
