On this day in 1933, Franklin D. Roosevelt was inaugurated as President of the United States during the depths of the Great Depression. In his first inaugural address, he delivered the famous line, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself,” setting the tone for his New Deal programs aimed at restoring confidence and rebuilding the economy.
March 4 had traditionally been Inauguration Day for U.S. presidents until 1937, when the date was changed to January 20 following the ratification of the 20th Amendment.

Yesterday’s Poll Results: How Do You Use a Smart Speaker?

The results reveal a clear divide: while 32% primarily use their smart speaker for music, the largest group — 42% — don’t use one at all. That suggests curiosity may still be outweighing adoption, with many readers either undecided or unconvinced about bringing one into their homes. Among those who do use them beyond music, smaller groups rely on smart speakers for news and weather (7%), controlling smart home devices (7%), reminders and organization (6%), or staying connected with family (2%). Overall, the responses show that while smart speakers are popular for entertainment, many readers either haven’t embraced the technology yet or may not feel they need it — at least for now.
TOP COMMENTS
“With multiple smart speakers we use some for just music while in that room but also to turn lights on or off, set timers and start routines that perform multiple tasks.”
“The only smart device we have is Alexa, for our TV.”
“I use it for a combination of all of these.”
“Smart speakers spy on you and listen to every word you say. It's like having the feds living in your house.”
Skip the Crowds: How Regional Airports Can Make Travel Easier and More Affordable
Many travelers automatically think of major hubs like JFK or LAX, but flying from a nearby regional airport can actually simplify your travel and cut down stress. One frequent flyer shared that using her local regional airport means she can arrive later, breeze through nearly empty security lines, and enjoy nearby parking — all without the long drives and crowds associated with big airports.
Smaller airports often offer lower fares and cheaper parking because operating costs are lower and budget carriers choose these locations when they can. With fewer passengers to process, lines tend to be shorter and getting from parking to your gate can take just minutes rather than long walks or shuttle rides.
That said, there are trade-offs: you may have fewer nonstop flights and need to connect through a larger hub, and creature comforts like restaurants and shops may be limited. But for many travelers — especially those who live close by — the convenience, lower cost, and reduced travel stress make regional airports an appealing option worth checking when you book your next trip.

Good News of the Day
After Planting 37,000 Trees, Kazakhstan Brings Tigers Back to Historic Habitat
Kazakhstan is laying the ecological groundwork to bring tigers back to lands where they have been absent for more than 70 years by planting tens of thousands of native tree seedlings along the shores of Lake Balkhash and its surrounding riparian forests. Last year alone, conservation partners including the Kazakh government, WWF, and the UN Development Programme planted 37,000 young trees — part of a much larger effort to restore a healthy ecosystem with prey species and shelter suitable for big cats.
The large-scale planting supports a broader reintroduction program that has already seen a breeding pair of Amur tigers brought in as part of a captive-to-wild initiative and plans for more wild tigers to arrive from Russia this spring. These efforts aim to not only restore the historic range of tigers but also rebuild the complex web of wildlife that helps sustain them in the wild.
If successful, Kazakhstan’s work will mark a major conservation milestone — the first time a region where tigers went locally extinct will once again host these iconic predators, bringing hope for expanded biodiversity and healthier ecosystems in Central Asia.
