On this day in 1959, the iconic Barbie doll was introduced to the public at the American International Toy Fair in New York City. Created by Ruth Handler, co-founder of Mattel, Barbie was inspired by the idea that girls might enjoy imagining their futures through adult-styled dolls rather than only baby dolls.

The first Barbie wore a black-and-white striped swimsuit, had a ponytail hairstyle, and sold for about $3. Over the decades, Barbie has become one of the most recognizable toys in the world, with billions of dolls sold and careers ranging from astronaut to president. Today, March 9 is often celebrated by fans as Barbie’s “birthday.”

Understanding Annuities: Pros, Cons, and Payout Options

As retirement planning becomes more complex, many older adults are exploring financial tools that provide stability and predictable income. One option that often comes up is an annuity. While annuities can play a helpful role in retirement planning, it’s important to understand how they work before deciding if they’re the right fit.

An annuity is a financial product typically offered by insurance companies. In simple terms, you make a lump-sum payment or a series of contributions, and in return the company provides regular payments to you in the future. These payments can begin immediately or at a later date, depending on the type of annuity you choose.

One of the biggest advantages of annuities is the potential for guaranteed income. Many retirees appreciate the peace of mind that comes with knowing they will receive consistent payments each month, similar to a pension. Some annuities even offer lifetime payouts, which means you continue receiving payments no matter how long you live. This can help reduce the worry of outliving your savings.

Another benefit is tax-deferred growth. Money inside an annuity can grow over time without being taxed until it is withdrawn. For people who have already maximized contributions to retirement accounts like IRAs or 401(k)s, annuities may provide an additional way to save for the future.

However, annuities also come with potential drawbacks. Many contracts include fees for management, insurance features, or early withdrawals. Some annuities also have “surrender periods,” meaning there may be penalties if you try to take out your money within the first several years. Because of these complexities, annuities can sometimes be difficult to compare or fully understand without careful review.

There are also several different payout options to consider. A life-only payout provides the highest monthly income but stops when the annuity holder passes away. A joint-life option continues payments for both spouses, though the monthly amount may be slightly lower. Some people choose a “period certain” option, which guarantees payments for a specific number of years regardless of what happens to the annuity holder.

Ultimately, annuities can be a valuable tool for creating steady retirement income, but they are not a one-size-fits-all solution. Before purchasing one, it’s wise to review the terms carefully and consider how it fits with other retirement income sources such as Social Security, pensions, or savings.

Yesterday’s Poll Results: Would you attend an art exhibition curated by seniors in your community?

The results suggest strong enthusiasm for the idea of senior-curated art exhibitions. The largest group of respondents—40%—said they would attend because it sounds inspiring, indicating clear interest in seeing art presented through the perspective of older adults. Another 32.3% said they might attend depending on the theme, suggesting that while the concept is appealing, the subject matter of the exhibit still plays an important role in drawing visitors.

Interestingly, nearly a quarter of respondents (23.1%) said they didn’t realize seniors curated exhibitions until now, highlighting that many people are simply unaware these programs exist. This suggests there may be significant potential interest if communities promote these initiatives more widely. Only a very small number (1.5%) said they prefer traditional museum exhibitions, while 3.1% selected “Other.”

Overall, the poll points to a receptive audience and a level of curiosity about senior-led arts programming—especially when exhibits offer engaging themes and opportunities to see creativity through the lens of life experience.

The Quiet Words That Shape Our Lives—And Why It’s Never Too Late to Challenge Them

This reflective piece explores how many people unknowingly carry a single sentence—often something said casually years earlier—that shapes their beliefs about what they can or cannot do. The story centers on a woman over 60 who wanted to turn a heartfelt message for a friend into a song but hesitated to sing it herself because a relative once told her she “couldn’t sing.” That comment, though likely fleeting, had quietly guided her choices for decades. Encouraged to try anyway, she eventually recorded herself singing the song, not to prove anything but simply to step beyond the limitation she had accepted. The article suggests that many of us live within similar “sentences” spoken by others—remarks like “that’s not your thing” or “you’re not good at that”—which slowly harden into identity if left unchallenged. By trying the very things we believe we’re not meant to do, we may discover unexpected abilities or new passions, and even when we don’t master them, the act of testing those assumptions can open the door to a more authentic and self-directed life.

Slang Phrase of the Day

Phrase: Snacc

Meaning: A playful slang term used online to describe someone who looks especially attractive or stylish. It’s a humorous way of saying a person is so good-looking they’re like a “snack”—something delightful you can’t help but notice.

From Trash to Tomatoes: Innovative Dome Turns Landfill Gas into Fresh Food

A pioneering project in Wiltshire, England is transforming landfill waste into a surprising new source of fresh produce by using gases from decomposing trash to power a giant greenhouse dome. Methane released from the landfill is captured and converted into electricity, which runs heating systems, lights, and fans inside the climate-controlled dome, while carbon dioxide produced in the process is fed to the plants to boost photosynthesis. Inside the inflatable structure—roughly the size of three tennis courts—crops are grown using hydroponics and raised beds, allowing fruits and vegetables to be produced year-round even during cold winters. The project, developed by Sustain Wiltshire at a landfill run by Crapper and Sons, is considered a “world first” and could eventually expand to dozens of domes capable of supplying a large share of local produce while reducing emissions and turning waste sites into sustainable food hubs.
