Lost WWII Locket Finds Its Way Home Through Social Media
A cherished World War II-era locket, missing for decades, has been reunited with its rightful family thanks to the keen eye of a thrift store shopper and the power of social media. While browsing a thrift shop in Barrie, Ontario, Alison Anne discovered a locket containing a black-and-white photo of a Royal Canadian Air Force officer. Recognizing its potential historical significance, she purchased the locket and shared images on Facebook, hoping to locate its owner. Kelly Brown, a member of the Aurora branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, was stunned to see the post featuring her grandparents' photo. Her grandfather, Bill Mitchell, served as a Warrant Officer 2nd Class in the RCAF during WWII and was awarded the Burma Star and the 1939–45 War Medal. The locket had been missing since around 2000, possibly lost during a house party or a family estate cleanout. The locket's journey from a thrift store to a Facebook post and back to Brown underscores the profound impact of community efforts and digital platforms in preserving personal histories and reconnecting families with their heritage.
