From classic album art to the tactile joy of flipping a record, vinyl offers a listening ritual that digital just can’t match. Whether you're revisiting a beloved format or starting fresh, here are a few basics to help you dive into the world of vinyl.
Start With What You Love
The best collections are built on personal taste. Begin with records that hold meaning for you—whether it's the Beatles album you wore out in college or a jazz favorite your parents played on weekend mornings. Don’t worry about value or rarity at first. Collect what you love, and the rest will follow.
Understand the Types of Records
Most vinyl records come in three standard sizes: 7-inch (singles), 10-inch (less common), and 12-inch (full albums or LPs). Records also spin at different speeds—33 ⅓ RPM and 45 RPM are the most common. Make sure your turntable can accommodate both.
Condition Matters
When buying used records, check the condition of both the vinyl and the jacket. Light surface scratches are usually okay, but deep gouges can affect sound. Look for records labeled as “VG+” (Very Good Plus) or better in condition. Bonus points if the cover art and inserts are intact!

In a significant conservation effort, ten critically endangered Siamese crocodiles were recently released into the Xe Champhone Wetlands in Savannakhet Province, Laos. The release coincided with the inauguration of the Xe Champhone Wetland and Crocodile Information Center, designed to educate visitors and support ongoing conservation efforts. Local communities, in collaboration with the Wildlife Conservation Society and government officials, are actively involved in monitoring and protecting these habitats to ensure the survival of the Siamese crocodile.
